Hello! I am a new subscriber to the Wigtownshire list and am hoping to confirm and expand upon what I believe are family roots in the county. My ggg-grandfather was Robert John Clarke. He first appears in a U.S. Census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, living with his parents Robert and Agnes Clark. He is listed as 21 months old. All three are listed as born in Scotland. In searching the Scotland's People site, I find a Robert Clark, born June 4, 1848, in Glengyre to John Clark and Agnes Dinwoodie; he was baptized July 25, 1848, in Kirkcolm Parish. I've also found a Robert Clarke, age 8 months and born in Scotland, arriving in New York City on Oct. 29, 1849, sailing from Liverpool. He is with a woman, Mary Clarke, age 25, of Scotland. Maybe she is a Mary Agnes? Maybe father John is on an earlier ship, looking for work? There are *many* John Clarks in the immigrations records, so I haven't gone down that path yet. John and Agnes had another child, Margaret (Maggie) in 1853 in Kentucky. I do not know when John died; however, Agnes married a William Bacon in 1857 in Kentucky. Robert John Clarke died in Evansville, Indiana, July 28, 1884. I am trying to learn anything about John, Agnes and Robert from their time in Wigtownshire. Any hints, tips, suggestions are more than welcome! Thank you.
