    3. Hi Betty, Further to my previous response, I have looked at a number of OPR entries for your McCARLIEs and a further look at old maps on the NLS site. *Old Luce OPRs:* * 6th Janr 1777* Alexr McCarlie at Clachan & Lenora Kelly at Kirkstyle being legally proclaimed before this Congregation in order to marriage & no objections being made to the Contrary, they were accordingly married at Kirkstyle the Sixth Janr JajvijC & Seventy Seven by Mr Tesedale before William & Charles Adairs at said Clachan *20th Octr 1777* John McCarlie Son to Alexr McCarlie in Stewarts Croft was baptized by Mr Caddel the Twentieth October JajvijC & Seventy Seven before Thos & John McCarlie in Balmesh *20th Septr 1780* Elizabeth McCarlie Daur to Alexr McCarlie & Lenora Kelly at Abbay was baptized by Mr Drysdale the Twentieth September MvijC and Eighty Note: JajvijC and MvijC appear to be alternate shorthand for seventeen hundred, based on a modification of roman numerals. *Died in the year 1797* Thomas McCarlie Burnside Abbay (sic) / March / 16 / 1797 / 84 *Died in the year 1799* Ann McCarlie Daur to Alexr Burnside / Augt / 2 / 1799 / 14 *Marriages 1821* John McCarlie in Clauchan and Niven Mitcel (sic) in village were legally proclaimed before mthis congregation in order to marriage and no objections being made to the contrary they were accordingly married at Kirkstile by Mr McCergo Twenty Second March Eighteen Hundred and twenty one *16th May 1823* John lawful son of John McCarlie and Niven Mitchel Burnside born the fourteenth and baptized by Mr McDowall the sixteenth May eighteen eighteen (sic) hundred and twenty three These entries are consistent with my earlier speculation that Burnside was part of or adjacent Abbey land. I have not been able to locate it specifically on maps, but I have found Clachan on Ainsley maps of 1782 and 1821 and the Thomson map of 1826. It was in the area just south of Camrie Burn, surrounded by the Abbey, Balmesh, and current day Craigenholly. A clachan is a group of dwellings somewhat like a small village. I have also been unable to locate Kirkstyle. It wasn’t necessarily close to the Abbey, but it may have been. There was a Kirkchrist, which was near Milton. There was also a Clauchan Well in that region, which makes me wonder if Milton was at one time regarded as a clachan. The Clachan adjacent the Abbey seems much more likely to be where your McCREDIEs lived. According to the 1839 Statistical Account, the Glebe of the Abbey was 16 acres, which is equivalent to an area 278 x 278 yards. The boundary can be seen easily using Google Map’s satellite view – not just the light green area, but including the dark green surrounds. Stewart’s croft is shown to be just west of Glenluce Village, close to the Viaduct. I can’t help wondering if what is shown on Google Map as Viaduct Cottage was once the cottage on Stewart’s Croft. Diana Henry may be able to advise on that. Regards, Bruce
