Hi Betty, For the information of other subscribers, we had a couple of off-list exchanges where I requested some additional detail. You clarified that the mentions of Stewart’s Croft and Burnside Abbey were from Old Luce OPR entries. That fits nicely with Diana Henry’s advice that Stewart’s Croft was close to Glenluce Village. Burnside Abbey doesn’t seem to be recorded anywhere, but we speculated that it had something to do with Glenluce (or Luce) Abbey. I have found 4 locations with the name Burnside, but none of them in the parish of Old Luce, and none appear to have any association with an Abbey. Curiosity has the better of me, so I have investigated further and its time now to share with the list: Glenluce Abbey itself was in ruins by 1777 when your first instance appears, but it stood on good river-flat land which made for a modest sized farm. I checked the census records for 1841, 1851, and 1861 to see what could be deduced. The Manse was still on Abbey land in those years, and it is marked on maps, so I figured that it may assist in locating the residence of your McCARLIEs. In the 1841 and 1861 returns, the enumerator for that district has not listed adjacent residences in locational sequence. In 1851, whilst not strictly so, the sequence is mostly locational. The Rev. John McDOWALL and family were at the Manse in each of these years, but interestingly, in 1851 the Manse was enumerated as “Abbey” * 1851 Census transcript from FreeCEN (edited)* Piece: SCT1851/894 Place: Old Luce -Wigtownshire Enumeration District: 9 Civil Parish: Old Luce Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Folio: 871 Page: 9 Schedule: 26 Address: Abbey Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born MACDOWALL John Head M M 70 Minister Of Old Luce Parish WIG - Leswalt MACDOWALL Jean H Wife M F 55 LNK - Govan MACDOWALL Elizabeth J Dau U F 30 WIG - Stranraer KELLY Elizabeth Servnt U F 53 House Servant WIG - Stoneykirk MACDOWALL Mary Servnt U F 23 House Servant WIG - Old Luce Piece: SCT1851/894 Place: Old Luce -Wigtownshire Enumeration District: 9 Civil Parish: Old Luce Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 871 Page: 9 Schedule: 25 Address: Trench House Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born MCKERLIE John Head M M 75 Weaver WIG - Old Luce MCKERLIE Niven Wife M F 50 WIG - Kirkcowan MCKERLIE Thomas Brothr U M 50 Weaver WIG - Old Luce MCKERLIE Alexander Son U M 28 Blacksmith Jrnyman WIG - Old Luce MCCLEARY Mary Servnt - F 12 Scholar WIG - Old Luce Note that the above 2 households are adjacent – schedules 25 and 26. I have not been able to locate Trench/Trunch House on any maps, but it would be consistent with other documents to propose that it was on or very close to the Abbey farm. Of particular relevance are the death registrations for the brothers Thomas McCARLIE in 1855, and John McCARLIE in 1859: *Old Luce Deaths 1855* (from the list archives) #24 - Thomas McCARLIE, Weaver, 60y. What I think likely, is that Burnside was also a dwelling on Abbey land, but one which had fallen into ruin by the time of the 1841 census. Maps show Camrie Burn which runs through Balmesh farm and enters Water of Luce abt 200m (or 200 yards) west of the Manse. I wonder if the Burnside you are seeking was a cottage adjacent the burn, and on Abbey land. This is speculative, but it may flush out further evidence or comments from other subscribers.
