Have watched this topic for the last few days and thought I had more Kirkmaiden residents in my family, they turned out to be Stoneykirk places. Found online a LIST of the PLACES in Kirkmaiden though the placenames are current : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_listed_buildings_in_Kirkmaiden,_Dumfries_and_Galloway Short URL http://goo.gl/PKGq4 By clikking a location [co-ordinates] in the list, a kinda complicated page will appear however there is a link for Google Maps right above the words GLOBAL SERVICES. That button gives me a map of the location that I can zoom in or out of. Clikking ANY of the others listed there are also just maps. Along the LEFT is BING MAPS, that is the only one my computer brought right up in a satellite view when I clicked AERIAL. Green trees, roads, houses, shorelines, plowed fields, etc. WAY over on the upper right are the zoom buttons. Hitting any zoom got rid of the annoying MARKER right on top of the house so I could actually see the area as if I was flying over it in a plane. There is no AUCHNEIGHT in the list of current places however there is an AUCHNESS - Farmhouse and Cottage. Can see I'll be occupied for awhile..... Of interest at AUCHNEIGHT in Kirkmaiden are McGUFFOG, MURRAY and BONE families. Is that how this big placename map works ??? I can ask about a farm name and learn who else might have been there ? That can certainly work for me ! Knowing other surnames at those places might give me clues of family members who stayed right there. James MURRAY and wife Mary BONE wed 1839 in Kirkmaiden, many of their 8 children were born Auchneight but it seems not all were. The last ones, twins William and Andrew, were born Drumbreddan, Stoneykirk 1855 so they must have moved by then. Mary BONE's parents were Robert BONE and Jinat McGUFFOG, they lived Auchneight early 1800s. McGUFFOGs were in Drumore, Kirkmaiden around 1800. Since that list of Kirkmaiden places turned up with co-ordinates, surely other places will do likewise. I had Googled for these words : kirkmaiden farmhouse names. There was ONE listing right near the top of the return page that had Wikipedia link for : List of listed buildings in Kirkmaiden, Dumfries and Galloway . Will try it again for Stoneykirk....Yes ! Same return list, same format for Stoneykirk placenames spelled similar to ones I see for more of my older family names at Ardwell, Cairnwell and Drumbreddan. I see lunch being forgotten today......Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA ======================================================= ** <http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CDgQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FList_of_listed_buildings_in_Kirkmaiden%2C_Dumfries_and_Galloway&ei=LAxTUZyWOYTs2AXYnoHwBQ&usg=AFQjCNELrRe7HUMz-XzD_3FFJ_un3xAZbA&bvm=bv.44342787,d.b2I> On 3/27/2013 2:00 AM, sct-wigtownshire-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > ******************************************************************************** > > When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply.
