It is significant to realise that although it sounded like Meharry or Maharry it was spelt McHarry or McHarrie or at sometimes M'Harry with the apostrophe signifying the little 'c' in Mc. This was how no doubt it was heard by an outsider without a sense of the local pronunciations. McHarry in my youth in Stranraer sounded like M'Harry. I have noticed in recent visits to Stranraer that with each visit the local pronunciations are becoming more like the standard English. I was last there two months ago and it is ongoing unless I am with my older relatives.
