Whilst on a flying visit to the Ewart Library in Dumfries several years ago, seeking information about my McCulloch ancestors, one of the librarians showed me the most amazing book – an absolute tome in fact – of McCulloch history. It was a self-published edition of the “History of the McCulloch Families of Galloway” by Walter J. McCulloch of Ardwall. What luck, I thought at the time. However with only a few hours available to me and not knowing to which of the many McCulloch lineages my vague claim to this family’s ancestry lay, I was unable at that time, to do any justice to the absolute treasure trove of knowledge this book contained. Now, I have just discovered what may be old news for many of you, but since I have just come across it, I thought it worth sharing. So for those who have yet to find it – this book is now available to either read online for free, or download as a PDF file for a small fee. The website is: http://www.scribd.com/doc/77675716/A-History-of-the-Gallowat-Families-of-McCulloch (Gallowat is not a typing error) Actually I arrived at this website by typing in “McCulloch History + Walter Jamieson McCulloch” if you prefer. I note that there is mention of the McDowalls in the “Torhouse” chapters – may be of interest to you, Bruce?
