With permission of the list admin I am offering to forward to anyone who requests it, extracts from an old book entitled The Poor-Law Manual for Scotland sixth edition which was published in 1851 if my Latin date translation is correct. The book contains much information about the 'New' Poor-Law and has a chapter devoted to decisions made in Sheriff Courts following disputes between claimants and various parish inspectors for the relief of the poor. Below is a list of names of claimants and the various Wigtownshire parishes in dispute. Each entry contains personal information about the claimant. Please don't ask for the lot as it will take time to scan in but I would be quite happy to do a reasonable amount. Most of the court hearings took place in 1846 to 1847. 3 Eliz.
