Slater 1854 lists my own McWhirter ancestor as a vinter, along with dozens of others in the Stranraer area, in his case at the nearby village of Cairnryan. He was in fact a licenced inn-keeper. And when that is further analysed, I tracked his premisses down to a small cottage in which I'm told he sold beer and possibly whisky as well. Probably the beer was home made. Ian Ian Macwhirter
