G'day All, I am a newcomer to the Wigtownshire list, but have been subscribed to the D&G list for several years. My main interest in Wigtownshire is George GIBSON and his descendants. George SMITH, the son of Margaret GIBSON and Alexander SMITH, was born on 28 January 1878 at Garroch estate, Kells parish, KKD, SCT. Sometime between the 1901 Census and July 1904 George moved to a house at Greyhill, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. He worked as a gamekeeper. On 8 July 1904 George married Janet McQueen JOHNSON at The Manse, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. George later worked as a gamekeeper at Knockinaam, Stoneykirk parish, from c. 1909 to c. 1915. An article in the 2nd September 1915 edition of the WFP lists a George SMITH from Knockinaam as being recruited and enlisting with "Mr. S J FERGUSON at the Reformatory, Stranraer", and going into Motor Transport. Following the war George moved into Stranraer, initially living at 9 Princes Street. George continued working as a gamekeeper. About 1921 George may have become a motor driver with the Wigtown County Council. His wife, Janet, became the caretaker of a house at 10 Market Street, Stranraer, which was owned by the Wigtownshire Education Authority and, later, by the Wigtown County Council Education Committee. The family lived at this address until c. 1951, when George and Janet moved to 46 Murrayfield Avenue. George may ahve retired from work at this time. About 1958 it is thought that George and Janet moved into the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Angus SMITH and William THOMSON, at 52 Murrayfield Avenue. George and Janet both died at that address: George on 8 February 1969, and Janet on 7 February 1973. George and Janet had three children: 1. Elizabeth Angus SMITH, born on 11 June 1905 at Mye Cottage, Stoneykirk parish. After leaving school Elizabeth worked as a shop assistant until her marriage to William THOMSON on 1 June 1928 at The Manse, ?Jarvis Street, Stranraer. It is not known where Elizabeth and William lived following their marriage, but by c. 1959 they were living at 52 Murrayfield Avenue, Stranraer. They remained living here until c. 1973. I have no record of where they then moved to. I have not been able to locate a death record for Elizabeth or William in Scotland. Elizabeth and William do not seem to ahve had any children. 2. Margaret Gibson SMITH was born on 11 March 1907 at Mye Cottage, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. On 22 June 1932 Margaret married Leslie Osborne JORDAN in St. John's Episcopal Church, Stranraer. Margaret had been working as a clerkess prior to ehr marriage. Following their marriage Margaret and Leslie moved into a house at 15 Charlotte Street, Stranraer. Leslie worked as a motor car salesman, most probably for James McHARRIE, County Garage, 8 South Strand Street, Stranraer. Margaret and Leslie remained here until c. 1966. I do not know where they moved to from here. I have been unable to find a death record for Margaret and Leslie in Scotland. Margaret and Leslie had one child: Percy Osborne JORDAN born on 4 April 1933 at 15 Charlotte Street, Stranraer. I have no further informaiton on him at this time. 3. Alexander SMITH was born on 8 November 1911 at Knockinaam, Stoneykirk parish. I have no further information on Alexander. If anyone knows of any of these people, I would be pleased to receive any further information on them, especially where Elizabeth and Margaret may have moved to. I know it is a long shot, but one always lives in hope, and they are within living memory of some people. Thanking all the Stranraer residents of this list in anticipation. Jenny Gibson, toowoomba, Australia.
