John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland (1832) at : http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/540.html shows two castles in the vicinity, both in ruins - Port Castle near Kidsdale and Castle Feather. Would you know anything of these castles please ? The above website also has an index for the map of Wigtownshire, but does not list all the places, i.e. Houston's mansion of Cutreoch and the above-mentioned castles.
