I took a look at the LDS film of the original census and I am sure that PELLYESCUR was a transcription error. Both the writing and film quality are fairly clear, but the family name is subject to ambiguity. In such cases, it is important to carefully compare the ambiguous word with unambiguous words in the same hand. Having done so, I have no doubt that the enumerator has written PETTYCREW, but failed to cross the 'tt'. I have an involvement with the FreeCEN project, and will draw this to the coordinator's attention. Interestingly, the same family have been transcribed as PELLEYECREW in the Ancestry database. Finally, I checked Scotlandspeople, where the index has them as PETTYCREW. By the way, other than having a subscription, I have no connection with Scotlandspeople. You said you were new to genealogy, so there are two important points to take from this. Firstly, one has to be aware that transcribed data often has errors. Secondly, regardless of that, one needs to be open to spelling variants. Regards, Bruce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
