Hello - Scots (and Irish) Naming patterns have been a godsend to many of us. There is a local variation in Banffshire where godparents had the same forenames as the child being baptised. Examples from the parish of Keith - two children belonging to the large family of James GRAY and Isabella m/s DEAN: Alexander GRAY bapt. 15 Feb 1827 - godparents: Alexander GRAY junior & Alexander BREMNER, surgeon. Elizabeth GRAY bapt. 17 Feb 1830 - godparents: Elizabeth SESSIMAN, Elizabeth GRAY, Robert HENDERSON My GRAYs (Highland & Lowland) followed the naming pattern reasonably closely, as did most of my other families. But - not so Elisabeth OSBORNE (the dau of James OZBURN & Helen NIELSON) who married Peter MURDOCH (son of Alexander MURDOCH & Jane NEILSON/NIELSON) 14th Feb 1836 in Kirkcolm. Wig. CHILDREN NAMED FOR 1. Janet Osborne MURDOCH Aunt Janet OSBORNE (father's sister) 2. James Osborne MURDOCH Her father and her half brother 3. Alexander MURDOCH Paternal grandfather 4. John Osborne MURDOCH Maternal great-grandfather 5. Elisabeth Osborne MURDOCH Maternal great-grandmother 6. Jane MURDOCH Paternal grand-father Peter, the childrens' father did not even get a guernsey - and I bet mother-in-law Jane MURDOCH (NEILSON) was thrilled to be placed last on the list. Her son John MURDOCH (marr Martha FISHER) would have soothed feelings when named his 5th child and 2nd daughter (born 15 Sep 1852) Jane Neilson/Nelson MURDOCH Best wishes - Mary
