Author: NSeeds Surnames: McADAMs in Wigtownshire Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.wig.general/618.5.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Anita, Regarding your McADAM query... I believe that the family you are tracking as William and Agnes McADAM (with children Robert, Agnes, Jean, Elizabeth, John, Andrew and Grace) in Whithorn is actually: William McADAM, Master Joiner = Agnes HUNTER They can be found all the way through the 1881 Census residing in Whithorn Parish with all/some of their children. By 1871 and 1881, only Andrew is still living with his parents, and is the informant on both of their death registers. Death register for Agnes HUNTER McAdam, dated 17 Nov 1887 in Whithorn, states that she is the wife of William McADAM (Joiner) and the daughter of William HUNTER (Crofter) and Elizabeth Hunter, M.S. McKINNEL. [IGI and OPR have marriage of this couple as 12 Feb 1808 in Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire.] Death register for William McADAM, master joiner, dated 7 Mar 1889 in Whithorn, states that he is the widower of Agnes HUNTER and the son of Robert McADAM (Crofter) and Grace McAdam, M.S. STEWART. [No IGI or OPR records exist for the marriage of this couple, nor any of their children--which is why you could only find the William McADAM born to Andrew and Margaret.] Names of eldest son, Robert, and youngest daughter Grace appear to substantiate the connection...as does daughter Elizabeth. Since there are no OPR records for this McADAM/STEWART family, I can hypothesize that they may not have been members of--or active in--the Church of Scotland. Grace STEWART McADAM died 9 Feb 1865 in Glasserton. The record states that she is the wife of Robert McADAM and the daughter of Robert STEWART and Agnes Stewart, M.S. HAWTHORNE. Informant is her son, Andrew McADAM. Robert McADAM, crofter, died 22 Oct 1870 in Glasserton. The record states that he was the widower of Grace STEWART and the son of William McADAM and Elizabeth McAdam, M.S. CAMERON. Informant is his son, Andrew McADAM. I believe that both of Agnes HUNTER McAdam's parents died prior to mandatory civil registration in 1855. Regards, N.
