    1. [WIG LIST] William Campton, married 1855
    2. Derek Chambers
    3. Diana Henry's BMD'S FROM WFP 6TH DECEMBER, 1855 included the following MARRIAGE CAMPTON, William - M27/11/1855 - At Knocknain, parish of Leswalt, on the 27th ult., by the Rev. Mr Bennett, Mr William Campton, to Margaret, daughter of Mr George M'Kie, Portpatrick. -- In looking at CAMPTONs or KEMPTONs who migrated from Ireland to Wigtownshire, I have been interested in two elements in the records of this William CAMPTON or KEMPTON. A) Why his mother's name was recorded as something entirely different in the marriage record from other records. B) Why he appears to have been recorded in the 1861 census as 21 years older than he actually was. The birth of William KEMPTON, son of John KEMPTON, was recorded in Stoneykirk on 8 October 1834. His marriage registration put his birth date one day short of a year later. It also stated that his mother's name was Helen BROWN, rather than Alice WADE. His parents John and Alice were living in Old Luce in the late 1840s, but had moved to Glasgow by 1851, whereas William was still living in Old Luce in 1851. In the 1861 census, the family of John KEMPTON married to Margaret was recorded at 1 South Crescent, Portpatrick. John's age was recorded as 47, Margaret as 27, and they had children Ellen (4) born Portpatrick and John (1) born Leswalt. His occupation was railway labourer. It is not clear why William, who would have been 26, was recorded as John aged 47. William and Margaret lived in the Leswalt/Kirkcolm area until about 1865, when they moved to Glasgow, where they were recorded in the 1871 census at 17 Union Street, Calton. Are there any good hypotheses of how Alice Wade becomes Helen Brown? Alice's maiden name was recorded elsewhere as Air or Hare, but at her death registration in 1858 the name was Wade. Also, how did a 26 year old come to be recorded as a 47 year old? Derek
