    3. Hi everyone, This may be a little off subject, but here goes- While researching my family tree i have found that two of my relatives were killed in w.w 1 my relative from Wigtownshire died in 1915, at the battle of Loos in France, he is on a memorial in Loos cemetry, but my question is - where would he be buried ?, could he be buried where he fell ?, it was a horrendous battle, with many lives lost, and after reading a bit about it , it appears that he may have been gassed. Also as this has sparked my interest - what was it like in Wigtownshire during w.w.2 ?, was the pubs/hotels open ?, could they still get a wee dram ? Does anyone know of any locally written books, or web sites that i may try, you can contact me off-list. Janet

    3. I recently read Martin Gilbert's The Somme : Heroism and Horror in the First World War (2006). One of the points made by the author is that for many many of the dead in WW I, the bodies were never identified. There are many graves of unknown casualties and many memorials inscribed with the names of those bodies were never identified. Nasty business.
