I believe this is Charles' family: Clachan of Penninghame Old Kirkyard Memorial Inscriptions, p. 11 MI 52 "Table Stone - red sandstone. Erected to the memory of Thomas HANNAY late in Grange of Cree who died 13th Septr 1816 aged 40 years Also Margaret McCLELLAND spouse of Thomas HANNAY who died 11th March 1828 aged 47 years Also their infant son George HANNAY who died 23rd Septr 1816 aged 3 months Robert who died 16th Feby 1820 aged 10 years John who died 25th March 1824 aged 16 years Margaret who died 21st Jany 1829 aged 11 years Also Eliza HANNAY their granddaughter who died 15th June 1831 aged 2 months Also Eliza BEATH who died 22nd Jany 1835 aged 22 years. Mother of the said Eliza HANNAY and spouse of Charles HANNAY in Barwhirran, their son. Also Thomas HANNAY eldest son of the above Thomas HANNAY former farmer in Baldoon Mains afterwards in Garthland, Stoneykirk where he died 8th March 1875 aged 74 years." MI 53 is probably related. It was erected by John HANNAH in Mains of Penninghame in memory of...his spouse Mary DICKSON and several children. It includes "Also Patrick HANNAH late in Barwhirran who died 28th Sept 1834 aged 91 years." Perhaps Patrick was living with Charles when he died? 'Tis a long story which I will spare you, but some time ago, I determined that my gggg-uncle Thomas Hannay McCULLOCH was probably named for Charles HANNAY's father. Having failed to find a familial connection, I've assumed that the HANNAYs and my McCULLOCHs were merely close friends -- both families were at Grange of Cree in Penninghame. Now I learn that Charles died at Maldon -- interesting because that is where one Alexander McCULLOCH died in 1867. (We recently discussed Alexander's brothers William and James: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE/2007-05/1178747358.) Alexander's aunt, Helen McCULLOCH, married a LAIRD whose family was at Barwhirran in 1841 and 1851. (One family member was named Peter Hannay LAIRD.) Moreover, Helen's sister married a McDOWALL, whose family was at Barwhirran till about 1809. There was also a brother who was the son-in-law of a Patrick HANNAY (too young to be the one in MI 53, so no known connection to Charles HANNAY's family at this time). MI 54 is a McCULLOCH stone -- Alexander's parents, some siblings, and Alexander himself "who died at Madden [sic], Australia...." MIs 57 and 60 are related McCULLOCH stones. MI 55 is another HANNAY stone. MI 64 in Newton Stewart's Penninghame Old Kirkyard is a GIFFORD/HANNAY stone that is related to the Patrick HANNAY in MI 53 and connected to my McCULLOCHs as well. So...it appears that Charles HANNAY had ties to both my McCULLOCHs and to Alexander McCULLOCH's family. Can anyone tell me more about Charles' family, particularly how they connect, if at all, to the LAIRDs and McCULLOCHs? Mary Richardson
