Hi, While researching my family history using a document my grandfather wrote in the 1960's, he refers to a son as "a natural son by." In all other parts he refers to the parents as married. Does anyone know what the term "natural son by means"? I can find no record of a marriage in this case and the birth was not recorded in the OPR's. If the parents were not married, would the mother have appeared before a Kirk session? Cheers, Steve.
The term "natural" usually meant illegitimate when applied in this manner. You will frequently see the term "lawful" son or daughter applied to children born inside a marriage.
