Hi, I've been trying to trace the family of my gg grandfather Andrew William Mckie. I believe he came from Whithorn. I haven't had much luck proving it so I'm grasping at all straws. Apparently he named his first son Sucurgis or Lucurgis or something like that. Is anyone familiar with this name? Without success I have searched all over the US 1850 census looking for him. He is no where to be found before 1860. Perhaps I am looking for the wrong name. I have been unable to locate his parents in 1850 either. Bill in Virginia
Hi, Bill - I've heard of Lycergis before. A quick check in an online names dictionary turned this up: http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=lycurgus LYCURGUS Gender: Masculine Usage: Greek Mythology (Latinized), Ancient Greek (Latinized) Latinized form of Lykourgos, a Greek name which meant "deed of a wolf" from lykou "of a wolf" and ergon "deed, work". In Greek legend this was the name of a king who was driven mad by the gods because of his impiety. This was also the name of a Spartan legislator of the 9th century BC. Perhaps there was a fashion at that time. It was completely out of context with any other name in the family.
