>From Wigtown Free Press 19th July 2007 "The Way We Were" Thursday, 23rd July, 1857 Three young men from Stranraer have been lost to the perils of the sea. We learn by private letter that the three young sailors - Terrance M'Geoch, John Hutton, and M'Douall, shipped out of Liverpool in a foreign bound vessel that never reached its port. Shortly after they left the Mersey a terrific gale arose, and the three were ordered up to furl the main royal. While in the act of doing so, the foretopmast was carried away, and the main royal along with it, pitching the poor fellows into the air. M'Geoch and M'Douall were thrown into the sea, but Hutton escaped by taking hold of a backstay in his descent. M'Douall was never seen afterwards, but M'Geoch was observed to make for a life buoy, two of which were thrown out in the vain hope of rescuing them. The ship became unmanageable, and would not stay, so they had to let her drive before the wind and leave the poor fellows to their fate. The vessel, the "Uncas", Captain M'Lean, bound for Bombay, put into Gibraltar for repairs."
