Hi, I've posted this request before, maybe a couple of years ago, but thought I'd try my luck again! I wonder if anyone can offer any help or advice on tracing my great great grandmother, Catherine Doherty (Docherty/Dougherty/Daugherty - there are numerous variations so I'll use the variant used on each particular document mentioned!) She was born in Dumfries in 1849. Her parents were Margaret O'Niel and Michael Docherty. She appears in the 1861 census for the Parish of Penninghame, aged 12. Catherine had a daughter, Margaret Jane Dougherty, born in 1869 in Chorlton upon Medlock, County of Lancaster (now Lancashire). Maggie Jane OXBY appears in the 1871 census for Penninghame living with her grandparents (Catherine's parents) Michael and Margaret Docherty and their 3 sons and 1 daughter. I'm 100% certain Maggie Jane Oxby is Catherine's daughter, who appears in later censuses as Maggie Jane Doherty who married Alfred McGuigan in 1894. I found a Catherine Doherty aged 22 working as a Domestic Servant in the household of Alexander Harvey (a Tin Plate Worker employing 9 men and 3 boys) on the 1871 census for Didsbury, Manchester. After this I can't find any trace of Catherine Doherty (I've tried all variations of the spelling) or Catherine Oxby (just in case she married the Mr Oxby whose name Maggie Jane appears to have in the 1871 census!) I've ploughed my way through the 1837 online records for marriages and deaths as well as the LDS records with no success. I'm at a loss where else to look now. I've been trying to find Catherine since I started my search 10 years ago. I keep going back to her because I'm determined to find out what happened to her so that I can place her with the rest of her family. It's almost becoming an obsession now and this brick wall is giving me a headache!!!! Any help or advice on where else to go from here will be gratefully received!! (My other family names are McGuigan/McKie/O'Niel/Brodick from Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire areas). Thanks in anticipation. Linda Baker
