    3. I was always told by my relatives that you weren't in the Highlands, really, until you'd crossed to Skye and associated Islands. That may be a function of a higher proportion of Gaelic speakers, or of the rugged and beautiful topography. When Samuel Johnson and James Boswell toured, this was certainly considered true. -- D. B.
