Dear Wigtownshire list, My sister and I are researching our families. We are located in two different geographical locations, but correspond on a regular basis. We are both trying, without much luck to trace our great grandfather back to the UK, we believe in Mochrum or some nearby location in Wigtownshire. Here is what we know for sure, with a paper trail: Our father: John Bastian McCaig b. March 3 1916 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA., d. Apr. 20, 1983 in Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA, m. Norma Pearl Peel Johnson. Our Grandfather: John Henry Bastian McCaig b. Oct. 17, 1889, in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, d. Nov. 24, 1984 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA m. Mary Etta Gee. Our Great Grandfather: John Henry McCaig b. ? Wigtownshire, Scotland 1961, d. Jul. 28, 1924, in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA., m. Caroline Lowry Bastian b. Apr. 19, 1855 in Falmouth, Cornwall, England , d. Jan. 7, 1948 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. Two of my Great grandfathers children, Donna Marie and John Henry were born very close together; Donna in 1887 in England and John in 1889 in Canada. This suggests that Great Grandfather John and Caroline left the UK in the period between 1887 and 1889, assuming that they are the parents of both children. The problem is that we can find no evidence of John before St John NB Canada. For many years, I had his listed as son of Benjamin McCaig from Glasserton who was either the son or brother of Robert McCaig from Mochrum. But nothing to show this as being the case. If anyone has evidence of my Great Grandfather in Scotland, England, or his Emigration or Immigration my sister Marjorie Ann McCaig and myself Laurence A. McCaig would appreciate it very much. I have left Benjamin McCaig as my GG Grandfather until I either prove he is or is not. Thank you Larry
