Happened upon this South African 1890 death notice. When I googled to make sure that the Blairbuy in the announcement was the one in Wigtownshire (vs. a copycat name from somewhere else), I found these GIFFORDs plus HANNAYs at http://www.genealogyworld.net/ebooks/gifford.html. Coincidentally, my McCULLOCHs were neighbors of these GIFFORDs and HANNAYs, and I believe my 4g-uncle, Thomas Hannay McCULLOCH, was named for a Thomas HANNAY who was part of the GIFFORD/HANNAY clan. More precisely, Thomas HANNAY was a brother of the Andrew HANNAY who is mentioned on this web page as being in his nephew James GIFFORD's 1851 household. (My distant cousin Isaac PARKER was also in that household.) From Africa to my family. Small world!
