Author: vi298 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.wig.general/30.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This wreck is mentioned in the first chapter of Captain James Learmont's book "Master in Sail"in which he relates that as a child of 7 years he accompanied his father and uncle to the wreck two miles north of Port William: "...The ship in distress was the wooden barque "Cynthia" of St. John NB, and was from Java to bound Greenock WITH ABOUT 2000 Tons of raw sugar. With a Channel pilot on board they had mistaken the Mull of Galloway light for the Copeland and ran ashore on the east side of Luce Bay." He then tells of a gift from a wreck survivor: "...a tall New Englander called Stetson gave me a book. "Two Years Before the Mast" by R HDana. 2. Diana Henry
    3. Hi all, we are all having these problems so I hope this gets through to the List. I read the story about the Cynthia being shipwrecked near Port William, I did not know of the date of this happening so I searched for it and came up with this. (Deaths) In Somerset Hospital 27th January 1844 Captain Henry Ludlow, of the Barque Cynthia aged 34 years. >From this I assume that the shipwreck was after this date (but not necessarily) so there may be something in the Wigtownshire Free Press about it, which I will investigate. I have tried to sub to the Rootsweb gateway but got into such a "fankle" (muddle) that I gave up.! Diana

    1. Re: [WIG LIST] Is list mode broken?
    2. Mary Richardson
    3. Dear Listers, Five days ago, I posted that "it appears that no one who is subscribed in list mode has received posts for some time." See http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE/2013-02/1360197889. We have made multiple attempts to enlist Rootsweb's support to rectify this situation but have yet to hear from them. We deeply regret that so many of you are missing out on Wig list messages, so we have switched all our list mode subscribers to digest mode until list mode is fixed. We've also set digests to go out daily, so you'll see new posts as quickly as possible. We believe that list mode has been broken since at least January 12. If you're a list mode subscriber and haven't done so already, please browse our archives to see what you've missed. Check January and February via http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE/. If you think you've missed messages before mid-January, please browse further back to ascertain when you think you stopped receiving Wig list posts, and then report your experience to us privately at sct-wigtownshire-admin@rootsweb.com. (Digest listers -- no need to reply unless you, too, think you're missing messages.) Please know that we will continue to do everything we can to resolve this matter. Many thanks for your patience. Mary...and Crawford and Bruce

    2. Olive McDonald
    3. Hello again fellow Listers; While having a look at the Galloway Gazette today, online of course, I came across a most interesting article on the building of the Cree Bridge. Many local names are mentioned and it is well worth reading by you people with an interest in Newton Stewart and Minnigaff. Such goings on! http://www.gallowaygazette.co.uk/news/local-headlines/cree-bridge-bi-centenary-come-about The first bridge built in 1745 was at the foot of the Salt Box Brae, and was washed away in 1806. The new bridge was built in 1813 and is still going strong. I hope that you can get the Gazette with little trouble because this is a great wee story. Regards from Sunny Vancouver, Olive.

They are to be found for the moment on the home page of the "Wigtownshire Pages" on the left, under Test OPR Records, although eventually the BMD area will be reworked somewhat. But for the moment, there they are, and they include Minnigaff ! Crawford.

    3. If the death was registered by the Inpsector of Poor, it looks like she was being supported under the Poor Law. Have you checked to see if any poor relief records survive for this parish, Maisie? 1. [WIG LIST] Is list mode broken?
    2. Mary Richardson
    3. Listers, I am so sorry to bother you with this because test messages are verboten. However, it appears that no one who is subscribed in list mode has received posts for some time. I'm waiting for Rootsweb's help on this. In the meantime, I'm sending this message to see who receives it. Please respond to the list because I'm trying to force digests to go out. (For now, digests will now go out daily rather than after a few posts have accumulated.) As always, you can write us at sct-wigtownshire-admin@rootsweb.com. Many thanks for your help -- Mary Richardson SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE list admin

    1. [WIG LIST] Capt Edward Clint, Jane Graham, Jane and Andrew Smith, Auchencairn KKBT
    2. Maisie Egger
    3. I am trying to determine whether Edward Clint, Captain, Merchant Service and his wife Jane Graham Clint belong on my Clint family tree from Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Their daughter, Jane Smith, was the widow of Andrew Smith, Land Steward. Jane died in Auchencairn Village, January 25, 1885 at the age of 92 of senile decay. Jane Smith’s death was registered by James Gibson, Inspector of Poor, Auchencairn. I don’t seem to be doing too well in trying to attach Edward Clint to the many Clint names I have who had their roots in Auchencairn and thereabouts. Does anyone have a suggestion where I can begin to try to find this family? I looked in the MIs for Auchencairn cemetery but came up blank. Maisie
