Others reading this thread tat way will not see your subsequent edit unless they click on the link to the message board. Its not apparent why the message went to the Wigtownshire message board. Did William Clave originate or have ancestry there? I see that Nancy has provided some good information. The only thing I can add right now is my thought that Gladys may not have married a GILBERT. If the information giving her family name as GILBERT was a transcript, I suggest that you obtain a copy of the original document to check if Sivert has been incorrectly transcribed as Gilbert. I've seen so many hand-written records and so many accompanying transcription errors that I can picture just how such an error could occur. Of course the error could be the other way around, but if Gladys had Swedish parents as suggested, SIVERT may be the better fit. Hi guys, Down here in New Zealand we are reknown for using No8 wire to fix anything. (That is a reference to the ply of wire that is used for fencing all over NZ as we keep all our flocks and herds in fenced paddocks). I guess I don't want to know all the reasons why the list is failing but can it be rectified by closing the list and re starting with a new name? The list archive would remain attached to the old list for search reasons. How about SCT-Wigtownshire-new ??? Claire

Dear listers, I'm posting for a couple of reasons. First of all, I wanna make a post show up in a digest since we haven't had one since September 23rd, and some of you have asked me if our list is still alive. Yes, it is, but we're clearly limping. If you ever wonder if you've missed a post, you can always check our archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE/. More importantly, I want to update all you faithful listers about the state of our list mode. My Rootsweb contact used to update me monthly about our problem (albeit with nothing to report), and then his reports became more sporadic. I last heard from him four months ago, so I wrote to him earlier this month. What I received from him wasn't promising. Apparently there have been two management changes this year, which could have impeded resolution of our problem. Our contact says he remains hopeful about a resolution, but we don't share his optimism and have told him that we're discouraged. With Crawford and Bruce's agreement, I've written to our contact and suggested a possible bypass to our problem. It's creative and unconventional, but it's also drastic. We await Rootsweb's response to our idea. If they agree to it, we'll share more about it on the list because it will affect all of us. Until then, we thank you SO much for your continued patience. Mary P.S. Have I mentioned that we're not the only list with this problem? INDIA has it, too -- succumbed to broken list mode "illness" about three months after we did. I keep in touch with the INDIA list administrator. He and I have yet to find other lists that are affected like ours.

Peter - I have a letter written from scotland to the US in 1865 that mentions "old David McKie's" death in Wigtownshire area (Penninghame parish). Also buried in Clachen were many McKies. They are mentioned on 14 pages of the booklet "Clachan of Penninghame Kirkyard Memorial Inscriptions." It would probably be worthwhile to purchase it if you don't have it already. McKies mentioned are John, son John son Peter, son Wm, son John, Jean, Margaret, Agnes, Elizabeth, Grizzel, Janet, Alexander, Andrew etc.= > > 1. I'm stuck on the parents of Mary Mackie. The marriage appears on Scotland's People and Family Search. They have nine children between 1829 and 1848 baptised at various parishes of Kirkcowan, Whithorn and Penninghame. I've traced them through every census from 1841 to 1871, where he is an Ag Lab living at Challoch in Penninghame. In 1881, they have moved to Edinburgh, where he is a gardener. Both are aged around 75. But then they seem to disappear. I can't find any matching deaths after 1881 anywhere on Scotland's People. I'm wondering if anyone can recognise this couple or offer any suggestions for me to follow. Peter in Sydney
I picked up on this from the Wigtownshire's People Facebook page. I wish I had something to contribute, but I don't think my large McCULLOCH ceramic platter will suit! Mary ____________________________________________________________________________ Here's a wee message from Fran at <http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.happysnail.net&h=mAQFVOL77AQEMY-6COOQaeOsl78T0wBv7AN-uO79karF4JA&s=1>www.happysnail.net, can anyone help her out? : As you may know, I am an extreme knitter using HUGE needles and 'yarn' made from clothing, blankets etc.... I am asking people to donate small objects to me that hold a memory of a person from Wigtownshire or an event in their lives that happened in Wigtownshire. Small beads from a wedding dress, a button from grannies favourite coat, a buckle from a shoe.....anything with a special meaning that can be sewn into the hanging. I am also looking for material to use as the base of the hanging. I will be cutting it into strips, sewing the strips together and then making a 'ball of yarn'. I already have had a kilt donated! When I am given an item, I want to record who has given it to me and why it is important to them. The records of the items and the stories they hold will be kept in a folder/booklet with the hanging and will be a permanent record of memories and the people who make Wigtownshire so special and unique. The finished article will be donated to the Whithorn trust as a piece of social history. If you have anything you would like me to include please let me know. The stories of everyday people are a huge part of our history! Fran
