Mr David M'Conchie, farmer there, aged 35, much regretted by his friends and acquaintances. This excellent young man lost his life by having his arm improperly bled with a lancet, and although medical aid was promptly obtained, he languished in great agony for eight weeks, when death put a period to his sufferings."Diana Henry

    1. [WIG LIST] Great to have the 'family' back on line
    2. Claire Clark
    3. Hi all, Great to have the 'family' back on line. Does anyone in Wigtownshire produce interesting local calendars? Perhaps photos of the area or historical landmarks - especially the Stranraer - New Luce side of Wigtownshire? My enquiry is prompted by my husband and sons already asking 'what do you want for Xmas Mum?'. They are all dab hands at buying online and a calendar would be a treat. The idea came to me when I received a 2014 calendar from a genealogist in Gloucester this week. The Gloucester calendar is very special to me as it turned the clock back to the 17h - 19th centuries when my patriarchal family were residents in the city of Gloucester itself. It was produced by the Gloucester Civic Trust and has the reproductions of etchings of every inner city church plus sketches of the City Gates and main street. It's one of those calendars that you don't throw away at the end of the year. Claire in NZ

    3. Hi Claire -- You're the first to get us back to all things Wig following our long detour through digest mode. Thanks! If your guys are handy with a computer, they might make a calendar for you. There are gobs of photos online. For instance, check out Wigtownshire's People on Facebook. Or just google on Stranraer photos, New Luce photos, etc. Mary At 02:05 PM 11/6/2013, you wrote: >Hi all, > >Great to have the 'family' back on line. > >Does anyone in Wigtownshire produce interesting local calendars? 3. Dear Listers, I've been out of town for a few days, so by now you've seen this test message from Rootsweb. The test worked, so list mode is, at long last, fixed!! When I get home tomorrow, I'll get to work restoring our subscriptions to the way they were set last February. The job is a bit tedious and time-consuming, but I'll let you know when it's complete, and I'll have more to share about what caused the problem. We'll be back to normal soon! She remembers her and said she came to the rest home in 1990 and died in 2006. This Gladys had the same birthdate as the one we are interested in and seems to be the same women. This women at Pilgrim Manor also gave me two Stepson's names, one a Paul Almstrom and another of a Richard Clave, which I will contact. I did not have the obituary of William but have seen the names of his sons and daughter of a previous marriage. It seems that Gladys came to the rest home from Jenson Beach in Florida. Why to Connecticut from Florida is not clear, but may be from her marriage to this Gilbert. I was not able to get his name as Gladys came to the rest home as a widow in 1990 so was there 16 years in all, pretty fascinating stuff. If you would like to contact me on my E-mail feel free it is: rgdickson39@yahoo.com Also would be interested in that obit. of William. 1. Re: [WIG LIST] List mode update
    2. Mary Richardson
    3. Last week I posted a list mode update. Guy Colby replied privately to me, and Claire Clark replied on the list. They both made excellent points, so I'm responding here for all to read. Guy wrote, "Thanks for updating us. Just out of curiosity, has anyone at Rootsweb ever given you a reasonable explanation as to WHY only two lists (out of 32,291) are having this problem?" The short answer is no. I've never received an explanation and have only been told the same thing over and over: the engineers are working on it. Only when I pushed yet again recently did I learn about the two management changes at Rootsweb this year. If there were a lot more affected lists, I think there'd be chatter about it on the Listowners list. I've posted about our problem from time to time on Listowners but have gotten nothing useful in return. Sooo...I don't know how many lists are affected, but I think it's safe to bet that India and Wig are the only ones. If there are more, the India list admin and I haven't found them, and Rootsweb isn't telling. With next to no lists reporting this problem, it's hard to get action from Rootsweb. Now to Claire's suggestion: "I guess I don't want to know all the reasons why the list is failing but can it be rectified by closing the list and re starting with a new name? The list archive would remain attached to the old list for search reasons. How about SCT-Wigtownshire-new ???" This is, indeed, the creative, unconventional, and drastic remedy that we proposed to our Rootsweb contact . However, his response leaves us in limbo: "Thank you also for the suggestion to create a new mailing list. If this situation continues on much longer, we may consider this. However, I am still hopeful to get this resolved soon." Sooo...we remain at Rootsweb's mercy. How much longer is "much longer?" If they can't fix us or reinstate us with a new name, we may have to consider moving our list to another provider. Our first leader Wayne Hannay did this many years ago, but we lost our archives in the process. I'm not willing to give up 13+ years of archives yet (though I think there's a way to keep them even if we move our business elsewhere -- but that's for another day). Crawford, Bruce, and I thank you yet again for sticking with the Wig list. Your patience through all this demonstrates how special our "hangout" is and how much it's worth saving. I have been informed by another source who I asked for some help with Gladys and she tells me that marriage details after 1963 are not given out, so! that's why were not able to trace one for Gladys to a Gilbert, so you may well be correct after all in saying she has married a ? Gilbert.. The only way of finding out will be through her death certificate, and like you, I am quite reluctant to pay for something I'm not sure of.. I have in the past, contacted the local registrar of the death of my grandmother and said "look, I think this could be my grandmother, but don't want to purchase her death certificate in case its not her, can you at least give me some details of her parents" in my case it was just her father John who was listed, but with a name like Axel, you wont go wrong. I do have an obituary (death details of Gladys husband William) when they lived in Jenson Beach Florida ! (I cant remember the rest, but have a newspaper clipping, if you haven't got it already) so Gladys must have lived there for a while before moving on. I looked this area up on the internet and it appears to be a place for mobile homes, looks lovely. On the newspaper clipping it mentions his son Robert and Chester (who his daughter Marion married) his wife and his sister.. Let me know if you have this already.. I tried calling them but it was to late and was told to call back which I will tomorrow. There are other sites that will give information out but they charge money. I think I will also try the town clerk in Cromwell to see if I can get some info. I will let you know what I find out. -Richard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The death is the one I sent you and I looked up that address and it looks like some sort of retirement home and I think there were a couple where it says they had care.. So she could have been in a home where she was cared for, she was a fair age when she died! I did find a Gladys E Gilbert living in Florida in 1983, it also states her birth as 11 Sept 1907 and since this is where her husband William died it could well be her.. It will be worth getting in touch with her last address, as I'm sure they will have records, it will say if she was Gilbert/Sivert which my gut feeling tells me it was an error.. Her death will say who her husband was, so perhaps just for peace of mind it will be worth investigating, you can go round in circles speculating she married a Gilbert, when she may not have remarried at all.. She would have been around 56 when her husband William died... She was! quiet an attractive young lady wasn't she, I have seen photos of her.. Was she a teacher? If you or anyone else have any thoughts, please let me know. I would love to clear this up. Blessings!-Richard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her husband William Clave died apparently in Florida after living with Gladys in New York. Don't know if they were living down there at the time or visiting. Her marrying a "Gilbert" is confusing as it might be his first name, last name or, as mentioned transcribed wrong. your suggestion of calling may yield some results, but its been quite a bit of time and I think I will try and see what that address is i.e. a house, or care home before I do. Her father (Alex) was a brother to my mom's father. I'll see what I can find out with the address listed. Again, many thanks for your help!!-Richard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you haven't got this already I will forward the information.. It might be an idea to contact the telephone number which was on the death details for Gladys which I forwarded, just to confirm that Gilbert was either her married name or transcribed wrong. I'm sure there is an address if you would prefer to write. Let me know about the other details of her siblings.. Parents Axel R Sivert and Ellen E Stonholm.. Same parents as listed on 1930 and 1940 census records, yet on the 1930 the family are living with relatives of Ellen, names are Carl G Bjorkman and his wife Martha and son Stanley A Bjorkman. Axel is listed as "brother in law" Ellen is "sister" and Gladys is "niece" to the head of the family ????? So! did Gladys Siverts name change to Elizabeth?
