    1. [WIG LIST] Galloway - Tyrone, Ireland. Stewarts
    2. Shirley Walsh
    3. re: GALLOWAY, Scotland > co. Tyrone, Ireland, STEWART families noted below are a little jumbled, perhaps someone has more information ? James Stewart, (probably a younger brother of Capt. Andrew Stewart), in 1619 took up residence of Ballymenagh Castle, co. Tyrone, N. Ireland. In 1671 James built Killymoon (Castle Stewart ?), co. Tyrone. He married Barbara Lindesay of Loughrea, co. Tyrone, and d. and bur. 1679 Derryloran. William Stewart of Killymoon b. 1625 m. 1664 Margaret Shaw (dau. of John Shaw of Glenarm, co. Antrim, N. Ireland, d.1727), and they had son, James Stewart b. 1665, bur. 1726 Derryloran (Cookstown, co. Tyrone), will proved 21 July 1726, m. 1709 Helen Agnew, (dau of Patrick Agnew of Killwaughter, co. Antrim, N. Ireland). .......................................... Ralph Lafferty bc.1715, Kilcoskin / Kilcoskan, Nethercross, Kilsallaghan Parish, co. Dublin, Leinster, Ireland, m. 1742 (in Augusta Co. Virginia ?) to Elizabeth Stewart (dau of John or James Stewart & Mary Shaw ?) Capt. James Stewart b. 1702 - 1752, b. co. Tyrone, Ireland, d. 1757 Dickinson's Fort, Virginia, America. James Stewart b. 12 April 1719 m. 1738 in Ireland, m. Mary Ann Lafferty b. 1720 Kilcoskin, co. Dublin, Ireland .......................................... There was a Stewart family of co. Tyrone whose heir in the early 1700s was John Houston, from Craigs (Parish ?), (Cullybackey ?) co. Antrim, N. Ireland. Some of the Houston descendants may have emigrated, some moving to Augusta Co, Virginia ? Would any Stewarts have emigrated with the Houston families, possibly around the time of the c.1718 "Boyd" migration ?

    1. Re: [WIG LIST] Galloway - Tyrone, Ireland (FERGUS)
    2. -------------- Original message from Mary Richardson <mrichson@ix.netcom.com>: -------------- > There was a wave of migration from Ulster to Augusta Co., Virginia -- > often via Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland -- in the early to > mid-1700s. > > Mary Richardson Mary -- This paragraph from your message intrigued me. My 4th great grandfather, Francis FERGUS, was born 8 Sep 1752 in Co. Tyrone (a date which technically did not exist -- obviously, his folks were among the many who ignored the official adoption of the Gregorian calendar). Sometime in the early 1770s, he came to the colonies with his father and several brothers. All but Francis and one brother, James, eventually returned to Ulster. James settled in Delaware, and his line died out after two generations. Francis settled originally in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and served in the Revolutionary War. He removed to Cumberland Co. around 1779, and by 1787 he was in Augusta Co., Virginia. He purchased 140 acres in Rockbridge Co. in 1790, and he remained there until 1802, when he moved to Montgomery Co. He certainly fits the migration pattern you described in your message, though he arrived a bit later. He has some 15,000 descendants! FERGUS researchers have long sought without success to locate the family in Co. Tyrone, though two FERGUYS (Francis & Jane) stones in the Cappagh churchyard outside Omagh are now thought to be those of Francis's parents. Family lore says that the family originally came to Ulster from Scotland, and although FERGUS is certainly a Galloway surname, I have not been able to find a trace of them in the D&G area. Guy I. 1. [WIG LIST] Kellys of Penninghame
    2. Malcolm Lockerbie
    3. Hi, I am a new subscriber and this is my first listing, so I hope I am doing it right! I have been researching my paternal grandfather John Lockerbie's family from Dumfriesshire for some time and now it is the turn of my grandmother Jessie Kelly. Although Jessie was born in 1880 in Minnigaff, her father James Kelly was born 1843/4 in Penninghame. Her mother was Jessie Maxwell christened 28.6.1850 in Wigtown. They married 5.7.1872 in Wigtown James father was James Kelly b.1810/11 in Penninghame (from census data only), to William Kelly/Margaret McKay,according to his 1878 death certificate. James married 5.10.1834 in Penninghame(IGI) to Margaret Hannah/y b. 1815/6 Penninghame? Margaret died between the birth of her last child Jane b.18.2.1849 Penninghame and the 1851 Census in Minnigaff where James was a 'WIdower'. James remarried to Elizabeth McLellan 31.5.1851 in Minnigaff. She died in 1868. As can be seen I have missing data on the two James and Margaret Hannay. I have contacted Bruce and Wayne directly and both suggest I post this enquiry. Access to Penninghame MIs might give some clues if any member can help? I do have the Minnigaff MI for the younger James(d 1914) which includes Jessie Maxwell and their children John, James, Maggie(Harper) and Elizabeth(Coley). No other Kelly Minnigaff MIs are relevant. Bruce could not find anything on the Pennighame OPRs, so again any member ideas. Also is any member connected to this Kelly family? My grandparents met and married in Liverpool in 1903 and all family contact back 'home' was lost after their early deaths in the late 1920s. I trust this makes sense and welcome any response or advice. 3. Hi there Mary Lou If you are after sights in the Wigtown area for a break from the genealogical studies - I would recommend the Mull of Galloway, the southern most point of Scotland. This would only be an hour or so's drive from Wigtown. I went there in mid-2006 to look at my ancestral village of Drumore and absolutely loved - and will certainly return there (as soon as possible). Climb the lighthouse, have a snack in the café and visit the bird place and look at the cameras panning around the cliff-face to look at the birds (if you're there at the right time, you might see the puffins). Drummore is a lovely quiet little village and I would recommend the Westfield B&B - we were really well looked after there! While you're in Drummore, drive up to Kirkmaiden Church - fantastic views over Luce Bay. Happy to send you a photo or two to whet your appetite! 1. [WIG LIST] Visiting Wigtown
    2. William Kelly
    3. Hello, Like Mary Lou, my family and I will be visiting the area to have a look at where our family lived. I don't have to come so far, however, as I live in Somerset. We hope to spend a couple of days (on our way to Glasgow) in a few weeks time. I am still quite new at this ancestry research, but finding it fascinating. I am descended from the Kelly (lived in Sorbie) and McCluskey/ Shevlin (lived in Wigtown) families, who lived in the area between about 1850 and the eaerly 1900s. I think most of the extended families left to go to Liverpool / Glasgow or further afield - America, as they seem to disappear from about 1880. One member of the McCluskey family who did remain in the area was my grandfather's cousin, Margaret Roddie (Roddy?) who married Bernard Herbert in 1897 and had at least two children, - Margaret and James born in 1898 and 1899 respectively. Bernard was a corn miller and may have owned a mill in the Wigtown area. I was wondering if any of the contributers recognised these names or knows of the mill? Also I wondered if any of these families' descendants still live in the area and / or may have access to this list? Thank you to Diana Henry for the web links and information offered for visitors. I am sure I'll make good use of this. I really appreciate all the effort that goes into making this such a friendly and helpful site. With best wishes, Bill Kelly

These are the STEWARTs that I'm connected to . James STEWART and Mary Ann LAFFERTY had a son who married my 5th g-grandmother's sister (totally unrelated to my known Wig rellies). James served under John DICKINSON as a captain in the Augusta Co., Virginia, militia and was killed by Indians in 1757; I suspect he's the Capt. James STEWART that you identified. James' sister is the Elizabeth that you identified -- husband of Ralph LAFFERTY. >There was a Stewart family of co. Tyrone whose heir in the early 1700s >was John Houston, from Craigs (Parish ?), (Cullybackey ?) co. Antrim, >N. Ireland. Some of the Houston descendants may have emigrated, some >moving to Augusta Co, Virginia ? Would any Stewarts have emigrated >with the Houston families, possibly around the time of the c.1718 >"Boyd" migration ? Yes, there were HOUSTONs in Augusta Co., Virginia, and surrounds in the mid-1700s. Christopher and Martha HOUSTON (http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Christopher_Houston_%28%3F_-_c1726%29) had a daughter Ann who married John WALKER. John was purportedly born about 1705 in Wigtownshire. His family lived on Walker's Creek in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, just south of Augusta Co. (http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/John_Walker_IV_%28c1740-c1817%29_aka_%22Indian_Killer%22). http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~richmond/ancestors/stewa001.htm#id497 claims that siblings James and Elizabeth STEWART had a brother John, whose son John Jr. married Elizabeth WALKER, niece of John WALKER and Ann HOUSTON. There was a wave of migration from Ulster to Augusta Co., Virginia -- often via Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland -- in the early to mid-1700s. BOYDs, HOUSTONs, and STEWARTs could well be connected in that regard. (That's my connection as well...via MAXWELLs.) I know this gets very confusing, but evidence points to a Wigtownshire connection. The WIKIA pages that I've routed you to are where the Wigton-Walker researchers are logging all their findings. Some other Wig listers are also researching these families; perhaps they can add more to this discussion. Mary Richardson
