Hi Guy Most agricultural districts have, or had, ploughing associations or societies. Each year they would hold a Ploughing Competition, where the completion was quite fierce. Winners received valuable prizes and trophies and, at least today, can qualify for the national championships. I am interested in the remarks about the Ploughing Society, as my grandfather, Thomas McCarlie, was the recipient of a silver medal in a ploughing competition. Would the results of these matches have been reported in the local newspapers? Betty
Well, I think I really do need a keeper! Olive McDonald respectfully corrected me on the name of her friend John MURPHY, not Martin, who confirmed the full brithdate for my grandfather Peter Clint of Newton Stewart, Wig. Just let's say that maybe I was dwelling in the past back to my salad days when I used to go "winching" the wee fella across the street whose last name was Martin. Wakey-wakey, Maisie

I have a Margaret Duggan born in Stranraer on 11 Jan. 1780. Members of this family were later known as Dugan or Dougan. I nave no information as to what became of this Margaret. However there was a Margaret Dougan who died on 13th May 1846 age 59 yrs. She was the wife Samuel Thomson. The age does not match Margaret from 1780 but we all know that ages on headstones are not always accurate. Then again this Margaret fits the time frame for the Houston family. Bill Dougan
Yet another tremendous response to a query. Thank you one and all. I Thank You Peter in Tyneside

These had been filmed on microfisch until about 1914, (when I believe the "funding money" ran out) and there is an index of names. So - to do a "look up" I would first look at the index for that name. However, you know quite a bit about his demise, so that is bonus.. It would have cost to put a notice in the paper so that is perhaps why his name does not appear. I have had the priviledge of visiting the Reformed Presbyterian churchyard in Dalrymple St. He is not listed in the booklet published by DGFHS, but there will be many stones that have disappeared over the years, and probably many people who had no stone raised to them. I hope this information has helped a little. Diana > Dear Diana, > I am not sure what the WFP is!Should he be listed?
