    1. [WIG LIST] George SMITH and descendants
    2. Jennifer Gibson
    3. G'day All, I am a newcomer to the Wigtownshire list, but have been subscribed to the D&G list for several years. My main interest in Wigtownshire is George GIBSON and his descendants. George SMITH, the son of Margaret GIBSON and Alexander SMITH, was born on 28 January 1878 at Garroch estate, Kells parish, KKD, SCT. Sometime between the 1901 Census and July 1904 George moved to a house at Greyhill, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. He worked as a gamekeeper. On 8 July 1904 George married Janet McQueen JOHNSON at The Manse, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. George later worked as a gamekeeper at Knockinaam, Stoneykirk parish, from c. 1909 to c. 1915. An article in the 2nd September 1915 edition of the WFP lists a George SMITH from Knockinaam as being recruited and enlisting with "Mr. S J FERGUSON at the Reformatory, Stranraer", and going into Motor Transport. Following the war George moved into Stranraer, initially living at 9 Princes Street. George continued working as a gamekeeper. About 1921 George may have become a motor driver with the Wigtown County Council. His wife, Janet, became the caretaker of a house at 10 Market Street, Stranraer, which was owned by the Wigtownshire Education Authority and, later, by the Wigtown County Council Education Committee. The family lived at this address until c. 1951, when George and Janet moved to 46 Murrayfield Avenue. George may ahve retired from work at this time. About 1958 it is thought that George and Janet moved into the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Angus SMITH and William THOMSON, at 52 Murrayfield Avenue. George and Janet both died at that address: George on 8 February 1969, and Janet on 7 February 1973. George and Janet had three children: 1. Elizabeth Angus SMITH, born on 11 June 1905 at Mye Cottage, Stoneykirk parish. After leaving school Elizabeth worked as a shop assistant until her marriage to William THOMSON on 1 June 1928 at The Manse, ?Jarvis Street, Stranraer. It is not known where Elizabeth and William lived following their marriage, but by c. 1959 they were living at 52 Murrayfield Avenue, Stranraer. They remained living here until c. 1973. I have no record of where they then moved to. I have not been able to locate a death record for Elizabeth or William in Scotland. Elizabeth and William do not seem to ahve had any children. 2. Margaret Gibson SMITH was born on 11 March 1907 at Mye Cottage, Stoneykirk parish, WIG, SCT. On 22 June 1932 Margaret married Leslie Osborne JORDAN in St. John's Episcopal Church, Stranraer. Margaret had been working as a clerkess prior to ehr marriage. Following their marriage Margaret and Leslie moved into a house at 15 Charlotte Street, Stranraer. Leslie worked as a motor car salesman, most probably for James McHARRIE, County Garage, 8 South Strand Street, Stranraer. Margaret and Leslie remained here until c. 1966. I do not know where they moved to from here. I have been unable to find a death record for Margaret and Leslie in Scotland. Margaret and Leslie had one child: Percy Osborne JORDAN born on 4 April 1933 at 15 Charlotte Street, Stranraer. I have no further informaiton on him at this time. 3. Alexander SMITH was born on 8 November 1911 at Knockinaam, Stoneykirk parish. I have no further information on Alexander. If anyone knows of any of these people, I would be pleased to receive any further information on them, especially where Elizabeth and Margaret may have moved to. I know it is a long shot, but one always lives in hope, and they are within living memory of some people. Thanking all the Stranraer residents of this list in anticipation. Jenny Gibson, toowoomba, Australia.

    3. Richard, Unfortunately all I know about my Fleming family is that they were in the Leswalt area in the early 1800's. The only names that I have are my 3xgt grandfather William Fleming & wife Elizabeth Jackson + Mary Ann Feming their daughter born in 1812.I think they also had a son named William. Mary Ann Fleming married Andrew Houston on 21st November 1833 in Clayhole then lived in Hillhead, Leswalt. Sorry that I can't be of much help to you. Annette

    1. [WIG LIST] Expanding research horizons

    3. My family "tartan" is woven from threads in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Renfrewshire, Dumfriesshire, Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Northumberland, England, Belfast and Carrickfergus,. Co. Antrim, (N.) Ireland, and of course Lanarkshire. I have some Hielan' names thrown in for good measure, but who's to know where my McLean and McDougall lines came from originally. The McLean history goes back to before the middle of the fourteenth century and the ancestral home is Duart Castle.on the Isle of Mull. The McDougalls were the Lords of the Isles, before Robert the Bruce usurped them. I make no claim to be descended from any big high heid yins as my McLean and McDougall lot have all been plain Janes and no nonsense, McLean from Wigtownshire and McDougall from Glasgow (so far as I can deduce). I waded through Glasgow born Nigel Tranter's "Robert the Bruce Trilogy" and at the end of it was convinced that William Wallace was the true hero of Scotland, particularly after reading about the wheeling and dealing by Robert the Bruce that resulted in "my" McDougalls being decanted as Lords of the Isles, with the Campbells once more in the mix! A snippet found on Google. ------------------------- [edit] Wars of Scottish Independence The MacDougalls were supporters of William Wallace and King John I of Scotland but were later driven out by supporters of King Robert I of Scotland during the civil wars in Scotland which formed part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. Two years later as Bruce led an army of three thousand men against the MacDougalls. John MacDougall of Lorne set an ambush for them but after a savage engagement the MacDougalls were broken and forced to flee. The MacDougalls lost most of their lands in Argyll which were then passed to the Clan Campbell for their loyalty to the King. However Clan MacDougall fought against Robert the Bruce and the Earl of Atholl at the Battle of Dalry in 1306 where the MacDougalls were victorious. However the victorious MacDougalls later fought against Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Pass of Brander in 1308 where they were defeated. Alistair MacDougall married the sister of John Comyn of the Comyn, Scotland's most powerful man. John's son, the "Red Comyn", was next in line as King of Scotland after the Balliols. However this was the time when Bruce made his bid for the Crown. Bruce slew the Red Comyn at the altar rails in Dumfries and the MacDougalls entered into the feud which ended in the utter destruction of the Clan Comyn and the loss of the MacDougalls' islands to Bruce.----------------------------- As noted, though many on my side came from different airts, Glasgow and Lanarkshire have provided some of the thicker threads of the weft and woof of my "fine tartan sett." The following should give would-be researchers second thoughts about just confining themselves to Lanarkshire, given that it is surrounded by eight other shires or counties. --------------------------- Lanarkshire (Siorrachd Lannraig in Gaelic) was formerly a county of Scotland. It was bounded to the north by Stirlingshire and a detached portion of Dunbartonshire, to the northeast by Stirlingshire, West Lothian and Midlothian, to the east by Peeblesshire, to the southeast and south by Dumfriesshire, to the southwest by Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire and to the west by Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire. Lanarkshire was for some purposes treated as three separate counties: the upper, middle and lower wards, until the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. --------------------------- I'm pleased that Wayne Hannay contributes data from the Wigtown Free Press to the Lanark site that could also have connections with surrounding areas to allow us to expand our genealogy horizons, if you will.. One never knows whose lot moved from where to there, an ebb and flow, because of employment opportunities, marriage, or other reasons. Maisie

    1. Re: [WIG LIST] McGuigan deaths query
    2. betty TELFORD
    3. Not for the faint-hearted! Sorry to prolong this correspondence but I enjoy trying to solve a mystery. Apologies to any medical specialists who will probably know far more about this subject . The McGuigan granddaughter at 13 dying of senile gangrene sounds odd especially as a few days after the death of her grandmother and one wonders whether there is another common factor i.e an accident (run over by a cart for example?) At that date without antibiotics any wound might deteriorate far rapidly than today. Looking a bit further it seems that senile gangrene may be due to arteriosclerosis not necessarily in the old, i.e it relates to the state of circulation in a limb. Playing medical detective I think it is possible that one or both of these deaths could be due to a tuberculous infection (then very common especially before the introduction of pasteurised milk) and this would affect both young and old. The result of this infection used to be seen some years ago when many people had to wear a very thick soled boot or shoe and had to use a walking stick..in other words it caused shortening of a leg. Could the deaths so shortly one after the other just be a sad coincidence? I have found an excellent web site which gives medical terminology for genealogists in case anyone interested.. some old fashioned terms in there. 1. Re: [WIG LIST] McGuigan deaths query
    2. This is a mystery that will probably never be solved!! Unless, of course, there was documentary evidence (ie. newspaper article??) of any incident which led to the deaths. I've got another couple of family mysteries which I keep going back to. Very frustrating!!!! Hopefully, eventually, all will become apparent and I'll discover who the real fathers of Alfred McGuigan and his wife, Maggie Jane Doherty were (very doubtful!!) and where Catherine Doherty (Maggie Jane's mother) went! Oh, Miss Marple, please come back!!!! Linda

    3. Thanks Mary, for checking this out. Seems very unlikely they were related to mine - but I knew it was a long shot. I have a John Blain, just a little younger, but he was born in Stranraer (or possilby Inch - forget which and don't have the details in front of the me just now), son of William Blain and Mary Maxwell and elder brother of my g-grandfather William Blain. Most of this family (though not John) were in Stranraer in the 1841 census but then disappear, some to reappear in Greenock. Thanks again. 3. Linda: As soon as I read the death detail I thought "diabetes"...even before I read further. It can be a hazard with this inherited disease due to lack of blood supply to the affected limb/s, usually the legs.. When not under control, often in the elderly/bedbound, the worst case scenario sadly is gangrene.. Diabetics should take care with their feet, especially cutting their toenails! An admirer of the writings of Dr. Chalmers, he was intimately acquainted with his Treaties and Evidenced of Christianity. 1. [WIG LIST] McGuigan deaths query
    2. There are so many knowledgable people out there I wonder if someone might be able to throw some light on this. It may be purely coincidental but I have in my family 2 deaths from 'senile gangrene of the foot and leg'. The first death was Jane McGuigan who died on the 18th January 1888 aged 73. Her death certificate indicates that she died from 'senile gangrene of foot (2 months)'. She was the wife of Andrew McGuigan, grocer, of 10 Arthur Street, Newton Stewart. The second death is that of her grand-daughter, Mary McGuigan (daughter of Andrew and Alice McGuigan and sister of Alfred McGuigan) who died on the 29th January 1888 (just 11 days later) aged 13. Her death certificate indicates that she died from 'senile gangrene of right foot and leg'. She lived at 17 Arthur Street. My query is - were they both involved in some kind of accident in which they sustained injuries which subsequently resulted in gangrene of their legs and, ultimately, death? Or, was it due to illness (possibly related to diabetes??) which coincidentally occurred round about the same time? This, I realise, would be difficult to substantiate!!! I know this is a long shot but, as I said, there are lots of people out there with a vast amount of knowledge who MIGHT have some information. I'm just curious (as we all are who are involved in this amazingly frustra ting quest to discover our roots!!!) and would be overjoyed if there was any information relating to these deaths. Forever living in hope of discovering more about my ancestors - Linda Baker (Lincoln, England) Other names of interest: Doherty, McKie, O'Neil

New United Kingdom Passenger List Website Launches <http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=4870983&s=69387152>www.FindMyPast.com and <http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=4870989&s=69387152>The National Archives U.K. have partnered to make available a new database of passenger lists for those departing British ports. This database was previewed by <http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=4870983&s=69387152>FindMyPast.com (formerly <http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=4870983&s=69387152>1837Online.com) at the 2006 FGS/NEHGS Conference in Boston last September. The database will ultimately include passenger lists for vessels departing between the years 1890 and 1960. It currently has lists for the decade of the 1890s. Over 131,000 people emigrated from the U.K. between 1890 and 1914, and thousands more followed in later decades. It includes departures from over two dozen ports in England, Scotland, and Ireland. This project is so important that a new website has been created to support it: www.AncestorsOnBoard.com. Searching the site is free. Viewing a transcript of the list costs £5. In addition to the transcripts, full-color scans have been made of each original list. These are available to view, print, and download for £10. The scans are very high-quality. The search boxes are on the home page, but you must scroll down the page in order to see them (a problem that will hopefully be fixed to make searching easier). This new venture will likely prove to be very valuable for those searching their late-nineteenth century immigrant ancestors from the UK. ...
