    1. [WIG LIST] CRAIG/McHAFFIE Mochrum Parish
    2. David Sides
    3. New to the list - my interests are with the family of James CRAIG and Jean McHAFFIE in Mochrum. Jean McHAFFIE married James CRAIG in Glasgow in 1805. They had three children Alexander (b.1807), James (b.1809) and Charles (b.1811) in Glasgow; then moved to Mochrum where Margaret (25 May 1814), John (4 August 1816) and Jane (16 July 1818) were born. For the children born in Mochrum, the OPRs indicate they were born at "Dirrie". In the 1841 census I located Jean and her two youngest daughters at "Dirry Farm". In 1851 there was just Jean (a widow) at "Derry", and in 1861 at "The Manse" Mochrum (she was recorded as Jane). Jean/Jane died in Mochrum Village, 19 June 1862. Her parents were listed as Alexander McHAFFIE and Grace HERON (I think it's Heron). From ages given in the census and at her death, she was born between 1779 and 1882, and according to the 51/61 census, in Mochrum. Husband James CRAIG was a Tailor, and I guess he must have died before 1841. No idea as to where or when he was born. Although I eventually hope to get to Mochrum in the future I would appreciate any help the list can offer. I have located a Derry on old maps, to the North East of the Carlin Stone and Eldrig Loch. Was it a hamlet? It seems a long way from everywhere else to be a base for a Tailor! Assuming her husband died while they were living at Derry, where is the most likely place he'd have been buried? Also, given that Jean/Jane died in Mochrum village, would she be buried in the churchyard there? What was "The Manse"? Are there any Trade directories that may have listed James Craig? Thanks to anyone who can help. Dave _________________________________________________________________ Turn searches into helpful donations. 3. Bill Kelly wrote: <snip> I checked the census return and found that Bernard Herbert and his family lived at Newmill Cottage. Does anyone know where that is? I imagine somewhere near the town of Wigtown. <Snip> Hi Bill, Newmills, or Newmilns, lies between the north side of the Bladnoch river and the B733 from Wigtown to Kirkcowan. It is in the parish of Wigtown and just 2 miles west of the town of Wigtown. It is currently a small farm only, but once had a "Farina Mill". That implies that it ground grain or legumes. Other list members may be able to elaborate. One of my father's cousins farmed there for a short period around WW2. Newmill Cottage may be the farmhouse, or an additional house on or close to the farm. Again, other listers may be able to advise on that. Half a mile upstream, (west), was the Torhouse Mill, which was a corn (grain) mill. My g'grandfather's brother was the miller there during the 1860s, 70s and 80s. There is now a trout farm immediately downstream of the old Torhouse Mill site. The chap who developed the trout farm lives in what used to be the miller's residence. When I visited there in 2004, he directed me to the ruins of the mill, and explained how he redirected the old lade, which brought water to the wheel of the mill, to provide water for the trout farm. This water comes from a small burn, rather than the Bladnoch river. Between Torhouse Mill and Newmilns, there was a Waulkmill, or flax mill. Regards, Bruce

    3. Hi Bill I have never heard of 'Pinters Circus' but all locals of my age and over will remember Pinders circus. This was a travelling circus which accompanied the fair, or carnival, on its circuit. Pinder's grave is in St Michael's Kirkyard in Dumfries, easily found by the white horse on top. I am sorry I have taken so long to respond. Bruce McDowall was kind enogh to offer advice about local mills. I checked the census return and found that Bernard Herbert and his family lived at Newmill Cottage. Does anyone know where that is? I imagine somewhere near the town of Wigtown. I wonder if anyone is researching my 'Kelly' family (not of Penninghame). They came from Ireland around 1840 and seemed to disappear between 1871 and 1881- most likely to America I think. They lived at Sorbie Village. William Kelly married to Mary Lyons (married in Armagh) had sons John, James, Thomas, William, Peter, Patrick and Arthur and daughters Mary, Roseann and Susan). My grandfather William Kelly, born in America, returned with his mother Margaret (McCluskey) brother (John) and sister (Margaret) around the early 1880s, following the death of her husband (John Kelly - a stone mason who died possibly in Albany around 1880) and lived there until around 1900. I remember a story that my grandfather had a local nickname of 'Pinter' . It seems there was a visiting Circus of that name and he apparently used to practice with the acrobats. I wonder if any of the local researchers have come across Pinter's Circus? with best wishes, Bill Kelly ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- No virus found in this incoming message. 1. [WIG LIST] Kelly (not of Penninghame) - was 'Visiting Wigtown'
    2. William Kelly
    3. Thank you to those who replied to my post. I wonder if any of the local researchers have come across Pinter's Circus? with best wishes, Bill Kelly
