I subscribe to the Auchencairn History Society newsletter. Perhaps you could contact Marian Makins (01556 640307) e-mail marianmakins@tiscali.co.uk who could put you in touch with someone who could help with your research. Some of my forebears are buried in Auchencairn/Dundrennan cemeteries and I've been fortunate to have someone send me photos of substantial-looking headstones for CLINT, HYSLOP and MUIR connectrions in Auchencairn, but none for those in Dundrennan. I've posted this query before wondering who could have afforded to have such large headstones erected for an extended family as most seemed to have been employed in modest occupations. Does anyone have an answer to this? Hi Layton The census of 1841 is generally the first to be of use to genealogists. The modern 10-yearly series began in 1801 but the earlier versions were only headcounts. One exception is Portpatrick where the Rev Urquhart recorded his parishioners by name.
