    2. A small error crept into my earlier posting. The website is actually _www.inverclyde.gov.uk_ (http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk) . An interesting site which carries and old advert for an 1843 sailing to Australia can be found at _http://home.gil.com.au/~bbiggar/india.htm_ (http://home.gil.com.au/~bbiggar/india.htm) It details some of the problems of emigration in a sailing ship. 2. Pauline, One of the main transport methods in 1857 was by ship from Wigtownshire and there appears to have been regular sailings to both Greenock and liverpool. Many people did emigrate direct from Greenock and it is likely that the sailings would be detailed in the local Greenock newspapers. A list of the papers in Greenock is attached. Newspapers The Watt Library has back issues of several local newspapers on microfilm, such as the following: Greenock Telegraph 1866 - date Greenock Advertiser 1802-1864 Gourock Times 1915-1980 Port Glasgow Express 1894-1967 Kilmacolm Advertiser 1974-date (hard copy only) Greenock Herald 1852-1937 Greenock & District Election Squib 1905-1907 The Watt library, named after James Watt a local Greenock worthy, is run by Inverclyde Library Service. Their address is _www.invercldye.gov.uk_ (http://www.invercldye.gov.uk) . They may be able to help or advise on who might be able to check the relevant paper. Regards John Arthington

    3. Just checked dates and interesting to see that Edward Tyrrell an emigrant from UK established his first vines in the Hunter Valley in 1858. Coincidentally, on my husband's side some of the Beattie/Moffat/Carswell/Osborne/Nicholson group from North Cumbria (probably Scots origin) moved to Liverpool area, but so far we only know of the Osbornes (Solway Firth dwellers back to the 1600s) emigrating to Melbourne and we are in touch with their descendants. I'm a mine of useless information! Betty ____________________________________________________ Yahoo! Photos is now offering a quality print service from just 7p a photo. http://uk.photos.yahoo.com

    3. My husband had an ancestor who owned a sailing ship which transported coal to ports all around the British Isles (in which he and his wife lost their lives in 1843 off the Welsh coast in a storm) so I have done a bit of a research on shipping around that period. You might find this interesting or useful ?- <<Tod and Macgregor had engined the first Maid of Galloway in 1836 and the second was to follow in 1844. David Tod – nephew of the original – was appointed engineer of the Maid based at Stranraer and later became a trustee of the Company. Matthew Langlands, the Clyde agent for the Glasgow / Stranraer Company, was a close associate of Tod and Macgregor for the next thirty years. He had an office in St Enoch Square and was also agent for the Glasgow / Liverpool Royal Steam Packet Company. There was also an involvement with the Galloway Steam Navigation Company and orders for two Countess of Galloway boats were completed in 1835 and 1847. The partnership of Tod and Macgregor showed that it was prepared to build and part-own in its association with Duncan McKellar and his Largs / Millport Service. From 1838 it proved that it was also ready to build and own, setting up the Citizens River Steamer Company. Starting with Queen in March 1838, a fleet of four ships was built up on the River Lee, based on Cork.>> this is part of a large web site on Tod & McGregor which I have copied detail from. I am sure someone more local than me could be more specific, but I would imagine if one is contemplating a voyage to Oz shipping might be the simplest initial stage. If your ancestor was a man of means possibly involved in shipping wine then he may have had contacts in the trade who would recommend a route. Actually Australia had an earlier start at growing vines than one might have imagined, I found this out with my own family connections with the name Tyrrell which is one of the bigger Australian wine producers in South 'Australia. Hope this might give a few clues. Good hunting : .Betty (Hereford) ___________________________________________________________ Inbox full of unwanted email? 3. Hi In 1857 Robert & Helen Beattie and family sailed from Greenock to Melbourne, Australia. What manner of transport would they have taken to get to Greenock from Stranraer? Robert was a wine and spirit merchant with three small kids and an unassisted passenger so presumably had some money available for transport. Would it have been train, or coach or a combination of these or ship around the coast? I have been unable so far to find a log to say if the ship collected emmigrants from the Liverpool Emigration Depot so it may in fact have been there that they actually came on board. regards Pauline Melbourne, Australia

    1. [WIG LIST] New Subscriber: DAVIDSON, BRYDE Mochrum
    2. Sue Thomas
    3. Hello to everyone on the Wig list! I'm Sue, and I'm exploring my ancestors in the Mochrum area. I live in Southampton, UK. I would very much appreciate any suggestions, advice, information, anecdotes, pictures - whatever you might have to spare me. Always keen to get copies of original documents etc. for permanent record, so I'd always send SAEs etc if wanted. I haven't much to exchange back, I'm afraid - I've not been researching for long, and have a young family taking up my days - it's their history I'm trying to gather, in truth. One day we'll make a holiday trip to this area of Scotland! Here's a synopsis of this section of my family, many dates are approximate: DAVIDSON: My grandfather was Douglas William Dundonald DAVIDSON. (b.1900 in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk; stationmaster on the London underground nearly all his working life) His father was Andrew Bryde DAVIDSON (b.1867 of Barrachan Cottage House, Mochrum; married Florence Martha MARSH b.1869 in Wells, when was a commercial travellor for a draper and met her at her parents inn; went on to become a station master). He had seven siblings. His father was William DAVIDSON (b.1832 in Mochrum; croft farmer of 20 acres at Barrachan; married Annie BRYDE). He had at least three siblings. His father was William DAVIDSON (b.1804 in Ireland somewhere; shoemaker; married Elizabeth also of Ireland and they then lived at High Milton, Mochrum). I would love to go further back down this line, if possible! BRYDE: My greatgreatgrandmother was Annie nee BRYDE Davidson (she was b.1833 at Carsduchan, Mochrum). She had three siblings (John, Mary, Archibald). Her father was Archibald BRYDE (b.1789 in Mochrum; farmer of 76 acres at Carsduchan; married Mary WILSON b.1796 in Mochrum). He had loads of siblings. His father was Vans BRYDE (b.1761 in Mochrum; farmer at West Barr; married Mary McCULLOCH, daughter of William McCULLOCH). From all the various snippets of info I have looked at, I've put together more members of the BRYDE tree, though it's all a little indirect to my own interests I guess! I would also love to extend back vertically if I can! Incidentally, I gather there is plenty of confusion with the adoption of Mc to the Bryde name? Bye for now, looking forward to getting involved with the group if I can. Will wade the archives next! Sue

    1. [WIG LIST] McDOWALL - MILLIGAN
    2. Wayne Hannay
    3. Cheryl. Welcome back to our Wig List. I had a quick look on the IGI for anything re: your Peter MCDOWALL and his wife Mary Anne MILLIGAN. The IGI shows marriage date as 03 Jan 1832 at Kirkcowan Parish. As you mentioned daughter Margaret was chr 20th Dec 1832 Edenkillie, Moray, but I could find no mention of son WILLIAM MCDOWALL. Peter McDOWALL was possibly born in Minnigaff Parish the son of Peter MCDOWALL and Margaret McCLYMONT. IGI: Film No: 538229. Further research is required. Perhaps others may have further info on your family. Wayne

    1. [WIG LIST] Possible Casino for Stranraer, Wigtownshire
    2. Sam Heron
    3. What would our ancestors think, Stranraer, Wigtownshire and a gambling Casino?? However, it will definitely bring a new vitality and life to the region. The top of the old pier will never be the same. I remember the fishing boats that used to be there in reasonable numbers. I learned to swim in the deeper by swimming between the steps in the front of the "Breast Works". It looks like it will now become a Casino security area. I also remember the October Fair and winning mainly coconuts as prizes on the games of skill etc. Sam Heron Author : Dumfries and Galloway Council Document Type : News Item Date last modified : 30 January 2007 Dumfries and Galloway Council Convener, Tommy Sloan, said: "We are delighted to hear that we have been recommended for a small Casino as part of the Stranraer and Loch Ryan Waterfront Regeneration development programme. "This announcement should attract more private sector investment into the Stranraer area, aiding the regeneration of the region. We have a vision to turn Stranraer into a high quality marine and leisure destination and quality housing, retail, commercial and leisure developments will form an important part in this. "The regeneration of Stranraer is very much a community project and key stakeholders and the wider community have played a major part in the plans to regenerate Stranraer. Community Planning is of high importance across the region, and there are strong frameworks in place to ensure the views of the local community are heard through consultation. "We understand that other local authorities involved in the Casino bidding process are setting up independent community trusts who will work with operators ensuring local opinion is at the forefront of any plans. The people of Stranraer will continue to have their say on the regeneration plans." There are now several more processes to go through. The recommendation from the Casino Advisory Panel will go to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell, and there are still several stages to go through before the application is given formal approval.
