    1. Re: [WIG LIST] Glasserton deaths 1900/ Drumoddie
    2. Bruce McDowall
    3. Hi Lynn, Here is a brief response to your query. Others may wish to expand. I share your concern about Scotlandspeople in that one can easily waste money finding the wrong people. If you are using their service for finding death registrations, it is better to go for married women first. They are indexed under both their maiden and married names, so the probablility of a wrong hit is very low. Once you have found the wife, you should get data which will give clues to narrow down the search for the husband. Not available online, but MIs, (monumental inscriptions), are often very informative. If you join the D&GFHS: http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/ one of the member services is a lookup of your family name in their MI record collection. The D&GFHS also has lots of booklets of MIs for sale. Some mailing list subscribers have copies of MIs for selected kirkyards, so you can get lucky with a lookup request. One needs to be aware that people were not always buried in the same parish in which they lived. Also, one can find mention of a family member on a family tombstone, even though that person was not buried there. The census is taken every 10 years. The 1841 was the first one where names were recorded. Because of the 100 year privacy rule, 1901 is the latest available. Scotlandspeople is a good way to access the 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901 census, but not so for the 1881. The 1881 data is only the same transcribed data which you can get from the LDS on CD or fiche. The others give you scanned images from the actual census books. You are probably already aware that the 1841 census for all Wigtownshire parishes are available at: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and the 1851 at: http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/HistoricalIndexes/census.aspx#search Both are transcribed data. The former has been more thoroughly checked prior to uploading. If you are looking for OPR records, i.e., the pre 1855 baptism and marriage registers of the Church of Scotland, they are available from Scotlandspeople, but you can get the same records much cheaper though the LDS. For Wigtownshire, you can also get lookups from these records. There's more about that on the Wigtownshire Pages, but there you will find I am one of the volunteers who do such lookups. A couple of things you need to keep in mind with OPRs is that they are far from a complete record of all baptisms and marriages, and that if there is no IGI record of a sought event, it is very unlikely, (not impossible), that there will be a record in the OPRs. Regards, Bruce __________________ Hello again--I want to repeat how much I appreciate this site and the people I've already heard from. If I know that people were born in Glasserton in the 1840s and probably died in the 1900s and are in the 1851 census, what are some of the other resources on line that I might search to look for deaths? Is there an 1861 census? 1871 etc? Is the scotlandspeople web site the best resource? I find it somewhat difficult to use, as one must pay before knowing if the information really pertains to the family one is searching, especially with a common name like Scott! I'm still looking forward to hearing from people who may know more about the ownership of South Drumoddie and/or what life was like there. I have seen that the 4 Drumoddie farms can be found on the UK ordnance mapping. Thanks again, Lynn in Fla.

    1. [WIG LIST] HYSLOP - two deaths at sea
    2. Maisie Egger
    3. On my HYSLOP tree, two tragedies related to the sea occurred in the one family: PETER HYSLOP, born April 12, 1837. Died at sea 1858 (No month of death.) I then have a notation that he is burred in Auchencairn Cemetery, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbright. His brother: GORDON DUNCAN HYSLOP, born October 3, 1848, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbright Died at sea January 2, 1875. QUESTION: Is there any place where one could find out the circumstances of their deaths at sea? Would they be fishermen? PETER HYSLOP and GORDON DUNCAN HYSLOP were the sons of: : JOHN HYSLOP*** 1788, Collin Mill, Auchencairn - 1875, Shuttle Bank, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbright GRACE THOMSON 1802, Kelton - 1882, Shuttle Bank, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbright. Any additional information on the circumstances of both deaths at sea would be appreciated. Maisie

I am new to the list, but have already been very impressed by the quality of information on the Wigtownshire web pages. What a superb job of making information available. It's an enormous contribution. I'll tell you what I know about our family and hope that someone will have more to tell us. Joseph Scott, born 1821-1824 in Ireland (that is a recent very big surprise, courtesy of the Wigtownshire on-line 1851 census), died in Glasserton, buried in Glasserton Kirkyard 27 April 1898. He seems to have immigrated to Glasserton with a brother John and a sister Martha. Joseph also arrived with his wife, Agnes Whitby, also buried in Glasserton Kirkyard, also born Ireland, died 27 April 1895. They came with one child, Margaret, at their arrival (between 1841 and 1845). They had 5 other children that I am aware of, born in Glasserton. They are John, Thomas, Martha, Ann Chalmers, Joseph. This last one was born 2 May 1856. He emigrated to Cardiff, Wales, married, and died there in 1906. He was my husband's grandfather. My husband's father was only 4 at the time of his father's death, but he always knew that the family had lived at Drumoddie Farm (South Drumoddie, to be precise). My husband's father eventually (we don't know when) emigrated to Canada and then to the U.S. Thus, my husband grew up American. It's very moving to know more about the lives that were behind us. Now there is a new country in the mix--Ireland. We have been fortunate enough to have visited Glasserton with my husband's first cousin, son of another Scott who was also a son of Joseph. He, too, was born in Cardiff, but moved to England. Some Glasserton residents--the Millar family--were kind enough to tell us about the area and to treat us like visiting royalty! Mrs. Millar's father knew of Drumoddie and, even at his advanced age, rode with us to show us the area. We saw that there were no buildings remaining from the mid-19th century. We would be most interested in knowing anything about the farms from that time. Joseph Scott and his son Joseph were agricultural labourers--ploughman, as we understand. We wonder what the farms were like, how big they were, who owned them, etc. We would, of course, also be interested in knowing anything else about this Scott family. I haven't yet determined if other members of the family are buried in Glasserton, or if they emigrated, or what. Perhaps someone will recognize this family as their own. I assume that they were Scots-Irish from the Protestant areas, as they were buried in Glasserton Kirkyard. Is that a correct assumption, i.e. Roman Catholics would not have been buried there? We don't know very much about the Scottish presence in Ireland, but we do have a friend here who is very knowledgeable on the topic. Their immigration seems to correspond to the beginning of the potato famine. I, too, have Irish ancestors who went directly to New York at about that time. It is possible that mine were from County Cavan, but I'm not sure. They were Catholic. Life was difficult, wasn't it? They did what they had to do to survive. 3. Shirley Walsh has been digging in an 1835 publication titled "The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, etc" by Robert Wodrow and Robert Burns. It is available on Google Books at http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC67468590&id=j0YRAAAAIAAJ&dq=the+History+of+the+Sufferings+of+the+Church+of+Scotland . Page 22 lists the Wigtownshire citizens who were outlawed on 5 May 1684 by proclamation of Charles II for allegiance to Presbyterianism. Most of the people on this list do not seem to appear on the 1684 parish lists (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~leighann/1684/intro.html), so this list improves our understanding of who was living in Wigtownshire back then. I have marked those who appear on both lists with an asterisk (*). I've also added some explanatory notes...and guesses...in brackets. Did he die young? as there is another brother, John, c. 14 June 1834. Thankyou for your help. Joan" Hi Joan, Further to the IGI information posted by Wayne, here are the OPR records from which the IGI records were extracted I have used a slash to indicate where columns have been used, and have not expanded abbreviations. The following two baptism records are transcribed from the LDS film of the Inch OPR: Robert Henry / Lawful Son to John Henry Taylor and Jean Gunion at Bridge Town Lochans was born 14th Novr and Baptized 20th currt 1819 John Henry / Lawful Son to John Henry Taylor & Jean Gunion in Bridge Town Lochans was born 28th Septr 1821 and Baptizd 2d of October Note that the IGI also has a J. HENRY born 28 Sep 1820. I believe that this arises from the original entry of the above record having been mistakenly entered at the bottom of a page which chronologically is amongst 8 births during December 1820. An attempt to erase this record has obviously been made, some sections more successfully than others. I have transcribed this, using [] to indicate where the original writing has been made unreadable. Some other sections are faint, but legible. J[ ] / Lawful Son to John Henry Taylor & Jean Gunion in Bridge Town Lochans was born 28th September and Baptizd [ ] October 182[ ] It is possible that a child was born to this couple in September 1820, but I figure the above explanation is more likely. The 28th September birth date would be quite a coincidence, and the fact that this record has been erased, (although not entirely successfully), are the basis for my suggestion. The subsequent record for John HENRY was in the correct chronological order. The following records are transcribed from the LDS film of the Stoneykirk OPR: Decr 19th John Henry in this Parish and Jane Gunion in the Parish of Old Luce were enrolled for proclamation of Banns three times first Lord’s Day John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Son / William / 1824 7th Mar / 1824 21st Mar John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Daughter / Agnes / 1826 29th Mar / 1826 16th Apr John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Son / Andrew / 1828 30th May / 1828 13th June John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Daughter / Jane / 1831 4th Augt / 1831 a8th Augt John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Son / John / 1834 31st May / 1834 14th June John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Lawful Son / Alexander / 1837 8th May / 1837 22d May John Henry & Jane Gunion in Thornbank, had a Legal Son / Daniel / 1841 15th Jany / 1841 30th Jany Regards, Bruce

    3. In Thorn Bank, Inch, WIG, this HENRY family was located. All born INCH, year approximated, don't forget ages were rounded DOWN to the nearest year ending in 5 or 0. Agnes Henry, abt 1827 Alexr Henry, abt 1836 Alexr Henry, abt 1837 Andrew Henry, abt 1831 Daniel Henry, abt 1841 Jane Henry, abt 1801 Jane Henry, abt 1831 John Henry, abt 1801 a Tailor John Henry, abt 1833 William Henry, abt 1826 Thos Wkenell, abt 1806 a Mason From seeing other Surnames in WIG [Wigtownshire] I suspect the very last surname to be WHANNEL, but its strictly an educated guess. Relationships were not given in the 1841 census, meaning it won't say if someone was a brother, nephew or a farm servant. Perhaps this is a blended family, with 2 sets of parents and their children living in the same household. With a listed birthyear of 1833, it looks like the brother, John is living here with this family in Thorn Bank. Remember about the age-rounding that yearfor anyone above 15y. It was not rigorously done by the enumerator, there was probably some ambiguity to the instructions. Will try to see where this family is in the 1851 census.....yes, now in Stoneykirk This family lived in Stoneykirk in the 1851 Census....the enumerator did not put farm names in this district, so you won't get the residence. Enumeration District 3, page 5, family #16 - John HENRY, hd, mar, 53y a Grocer born Stoneykirk Jean HENRY, wife, mar, 49y born Glenluce. Some of the tenants in 19 Century Mark (Stoneykirk Parish) are "Crofters" while others are not. The word is used outwith Scotland too. I'll not be exact, except to say that in SCT Highlands it is a rented/ leased farming property with a level of special protection for the rights of the tenant. The local authority may restrict attempts to convert the land title to another nature. Example, a proprietor wishing to convert to industrial, commercial or residential occupancy instead of agriculture may have to first apply for a De- crofting to be approved. I was long ago the <only> Australian member of the Crofters' Union, at the time the President was Dr James Hunter.
