    1. Re: [WIG LIST] Vintners in Wigtown
    2. The McWhirters
    3. Pauline. I suspect vintner was a lax classification and not all were vintners. Slater 1854 lists my own McWhirter ancestor as a vinter, along with dozens of others in the Stranraer area, in his case at the nearby village of Cairnryan. He was in fact a licenced inn-keeper. And when that is further analysed, I tracked his premisses down to a small cottage in which I'm told he sold beer and possibly whisky as well. Probably the beer was home made. Ian Ian Macwhirter

    1. [WIG LIST] 1819 Marriages Old Luce, correct Placenames
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. In the previous posting, one couple was written as marrying in 'Craignarket', Old Luce. The Place Names lists on the WIG Pages by Carrie Gulline lists CRAIGNARGET. I looked at the original and saw that the seemingly haphazard scratchings over the K in Craignarket [both times it was written] were an X and an overscript letter g. That makes it Craignarget. This is surely the right placename. Another was in 'Airyoland', there are a few listings for similar placenames including 'Airyolan' in Mochrum and 'Airysland' in Glenluce. Another was seen clearly as Glenhoul and found as 'Glenhoule' located in Glenluce in the Placenames list. 1. [WIG LIST] Herbert Eustace Johnston-Stewart insription Glasserton Kirk
    2. Lynn Scott
    3. Can anyone tell me anything about the following inscription, found on the south wall of Glasserton Kirk? "Suffibulatis Majores Sequor Highland Light Infantry. To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Herbert Eustace Johnston-Stewart, Captain 2nd Batt Highland Light Infantry. Born at Glasserton 15th July 1880. Served with the Imperial Mounted Infantry in the South African War 1899-1902. Killed in action at Richebourg L'Avoue, France 17th May 1915. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. And of Violet Corse Scott his loving wife who died 18th July 1915." Does anyone know what his connection was to the Glasserton area? Could he have been connected to Drummoddie Farm? My husband's father--son of Joseph Scott, b. Drumoddie, 1856, was named Herbert Eustace. It seems like too much of a coincidence. Yet, this man was b. 1880, around the time when our Joseph would have emigrated to Wales (he was married in Cardiff in 1884), so he wouldn't have remembered this man. Perhaps his father was also a Herbert Eustace in that area--he could have been known to our family. Since our family consisted of agricultural labourers, it seems likely that this was the name of a superior. I'm still hoping for historical Drumoddie information, where the name came from, etc. Thank you, Lynn in Fla. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Hi All I agree with Bruce that it is better to try for the married women first, particularly since we are able to put in both the married and single names. I was looking for one of my female ancestors and put in Smith, her single name, and then Gillespie, her married name. Lo and behold up came a Mrs McMahon. She had remarried after her first husband's death and because her fist husband was named on the death Certificate I was able to find her. 1. [WIG LIST] Coroners Records in Wigtownshire?
    2. john rose
    3. Hallo All, My 2xgt aunt Rosina Hill (nee Houston)died of 'self inflicted wounds' in Drummore on May 8th 1898. The death was registered in Kirkmaiden. Rosina was my great grandfather John Houston's sister. Does anyone know if there is anywhere local in Wigtownshire where I can find out more about her death?- Coroners records etc. I really appreciate this site and have learnt a lot about transport etc through you letters. I had often wondered how my great grandfather came to leave Stranraer in the mid 1860's and end up in the tiny village of Catsfield in East Sussex, England. Best wishes to all Annette
