    1. [WIG LIST] Dalrymple Family
    2. Kathy Jordan
    3. Hello All, My family left Scotland in May 1775 from Port Stranraer via the Jackie of Glasgow and traveled to US and settled in North Carolina. We have had research completed by Debrett that traces us back to Wigtonshire/New Luce/Inch. Our family (6 of us) are planning a visit to Scotland this summer and would like to meet some of our distant cousins, if the interest in us is strong. We would also like to attend Church where our ancestors attended if possible, and see the cemeteries where they may be buried. Please advise any information you may have of the following family: John Dalrymple in Muill, Kircowan, later in Mark of Luce, died in 1767 aged 83. Married Mary McWhinney circa 1722. They had the following children: 1. James b. circa 1724 married Margaret Milnay. James d. circa 1774. Had children John, William, Mary, Elizabeth and Margaret (possibly Janet and Agnes) 2. John b. circa 1726 married Margaret Gordon. Emigrated to North Carolina with his family of six children 3. Alexander, date of birth unknown. Living in Mark of Luce. Father of John and James (the latter possibly born in 1777) 4. William, date of birth unknown. Possibly married to Agnes McClellan and father of John who was born in Old Luce in 1774, residing in Liverpool in 1817. 5. Thomas, born 1736 (OPR entry) Probably in Upper Mandorke in 1775 when he acted as cautioner for Alexander Dalrymple when Alexander was appointed as executor to his father, John. 6. Archibald born in 1727 died 1768 (death entries for Old Luce) Thank you in advance for your help and interest. Best Regards, Kathy Brooks Jordan 1424 Pumping Station Road Sanford, NC USA

    3. G'day all, A big thank you to those members of the list who gave me information on Percy Osborne JORDAN's migration to Australia. I tracked down his address via our telephone white pages on-line and wrote to him. And within hours of him receiving my letter, I had a phone call from him!! He has also been researching his family, but on the JORDAN side - my focus has been on the GIBSON side - so he is going to send me further info on the family. This will fill in some of the gaps I still had, and break down a couple of potential brick walls. Hopefully we will get to meet one day, but he lives on the opposite side of Australia to me - several thousand miles away. But there are possibilities and potentials. Again, thank you all for your assistance with the George SMITH (his mother was the GIBSON whose offspring I was following up on) and Janet McQueen JOHNSON family following their arrival in WIG about 1904. Your help has been very much appreciated. Jenny Gibson, Toowoomba, Australia

    3. Hi Doug If the date of Mary's death was after 1855, when Civil Registration began, then you ought to be able to find her Death certificate in www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It will cost 6 Pounds for 30 credits. By the way you cannot take for granted everything you read. Whether it be censuses, certificates or tombstones. It's not always the person concerned who fills in the details. Ages at death are frought with error. The deceased aren't there to argue. Here are two examples of discrepancies out of quite a few in my tree. My ggrandfather is shown as being born in Bannockburn in the 1881 Census. He was born in Cadder according to his Birth Certificate. He lived in Bannockburn from infancy so assumed he was born there and never bothered to look at his Birth Certificate. My mother, who was the best person I have ever known with numbers, was the informant for her mother's death certificate. My grandmother died in NSW, Australia and the names and ages of the progeny of the deceased are shown on the death certificate. My mother was so distraught that she got her OWN age incorrect. Great fun though. 3. Hi Thanks for the answers to my questions. I obviously had a different idea in my head of the meaning of vintner. I looked it up in the dictionary and it is a seller of wine. The 1852 directory has over a dozen listed for Stranraer - was it local product or was the demand enough for this many to be importing and on selling. Obviously you didnt drink water and the poor drank ale or whisky but ...... And what was my Robert then that was different as he was listed as a "wine & spirit merchant". He came from irish labourer background so would not have had money to start up a business but is the only member of the family I have so far traced who "made good". regards Pauline Melbourne

    3. Hi, Laurie -- We corresponded last summer. Were you able to get in touch with Vicki Ellis? Bruce and I did some research on your family for Vicki back in 2005: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/S/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE+2005+23855492284+F http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/S/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE+2005+25715891672+F Did you find Laurence and Mary in 1841? There were enumerated as CRONNIEs: Piece: SCT1841/889 Place: Kirkinner -Wigtownshire Enumeration District: 6 Civil Parish: Kirkinner Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Kirkinner Folio: 6 Page: 7 Address: Kildarroch ---------- Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks CRONNIE Laurence M 25 Agricultural Labourer Wigtownshire CRONNIE Mary F 30 Wigtownshire CRONNIE Eudard M 7 Wigtownshire CRONNIE Sarah F 6 Wigtownshire CRONNIE Jane F 4 Wigtownshire Remember that in the 1841 census, people who were at least 15 were supposed to have their ages rounded DOWN to the nearest multiple of five. That means Mary could have been anywhere between 30 and 34. If your grave info is from an MI transcription, the stone may well read 1816, not 1826. There were two STEVENSON families in 1841 Kirkinner. You can find them at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl. Back in 2000, Trevor Smith <tsmith@shoal.net.au> was researching the John and Letisha SOMERVILLE STEVENSON family. According to Trevor, their daughter Letisha Jr. married William McCLELLAND. You can find these McCLELLANDs in 1841 Kirkinner at Barness. In 2002, Jan McKenzie <jangary@shoal.net.au> also expressed interest in John and Letisha's family. Hope this gives you some new leads -- Mary Richardson At 01:55 PM 2/17/2007, you wrote: >First I want to say how valuable all the postings have been. At Stranraer, Wigtownshire, in 1835 he married Eliza McKeniel. With his wife and three children he migrated to Adelaide in 1842 and began trading as a publican and later as a wine and spirits merchant in Hindley Street. He sold this business in 1846 and conducted his trade from his property, Home Park, Magill, until 1849 when he went to England. He returned to Adelaide in 1852, leaving his wife to attend to the children's education in England until 1854. Auld resumed his wine and spirits business in Adelaide and also began planting the Auldana vineyard.>> etc... It later mentions a son in Manchester.
