    1. [WIG LIST] Poor Law Manual
    2. Ray Boy
    3. With permission of the list admin I am offering to forward to anyone who requests it, extracts from an old book entitled The Poor-Law Manual for Scotland sixth edition which was published in 1851 if my Latin date translation is correct. The book contains much information about the 'New' Poor-Law and has a chapter devoted to decisions made in Sheriff Courts following disputes between claimants and various parish inspectors for the relief of the poor. Below is a list of names of claimants and the various Wigtownshire parishes in dispute. Each entry contains personal information about the claimant. Please don't ask for the lot as it will take time to scan in but I would be quite happy to do a reasonable amount. Most of the court hearings took place in 1846 to 1847. 3 Eliz. 1. [WIG LIST] Life in Wigtownshire in 1830s
    2. James R K MacDowell
    3. Hello again, I am returning to the list after quite a long absence during which I have discovered some more about my Wigtownshire forbears. What I now know is that my greatgreatgrandfather Hugh McDowall and his wife Janet Smith had eleven children, not six as I had previously thought. They had their first six children at Barwhirran farm near Newton Stewart in Penninghame Parish. I believe that their next five children were born somewhere near Wigtown between 1809 and 1822, but I have yet to find evidence thereof. What I do know is that Hugh, Janet and nine of their children sailed to America in three separate ships in the 1830s, headed either for Pennsylvania or Ohio (although the stated intented destination of some was Illinois). My current interest is to try to understand what conditions were like in Wigtownshire in the 1820s and 1830s such that almost a whole family decided to leave and what information did they have which influenced their choice of America, as against say Canada, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. Hugh was a tenant farmer. Was there the equivalent of the Highland Clearances in Wigtownshire? All clues or suggestions will be appreciated. Jim MacDowell

    2. Cheryl Heazlewood
    3. Hi Bruce I noticed from an email to Irene that you wrote that you have the OPR's for the period 1834-1836. I wondered if you would look and see if William McDowall, born to Peter McDowall and Mary Anne Milligan is mentioned. I noticed on the 1851 Census that he was born in Inch (on Ancestry it says "Itch"). I always thought he was born in Stoneykirk but can't find his birth there. Of course he may not have been registered at all. On the Census his mother is listed as Margaret, but Peter had remarried at this time because his first wife died in 1843. William's Marriage Certificate says his mother was in fact Mary Anne. Hope you can help. I'd be most grateful. regards Cheryl _________________________________________________________________ Advertisement: Getting married? 3. Sorry I'm a bit late in posting this but only came accross it while trying to clear out some of my mail box. I looked up the name Bradshaw and distantly related we have a David born abt 1791 married to Mary Heron, daughter of Alexander Heron and Mary Gifford - he didn't however marry Mary until 1862 which makes him quite old and gives the possibility of him having a previous marriage. In my notes he died about 80yrs old. This David could quite possibly be Ann Bradshaw's Father. I never looked into children of this marriage or indeed for any further information. Could be something or nothing! Regards Margaret. Wayne Hannay <wayne.hannay@shaw.ca> wrote: Sylvia. Your Ann BRADSHAW was born 14 APR 1834 `of Boghouse, Mochrum, Wigtownshire. 3. Hi Listers, you have been highly recommended by lister Patricia McQueen as being a friendly lot, so Ive brought my problematical 3 xgreat grandfather over to you to see if he made it into your area. I first have knowledge of him from the 1851 census when he's in Kilblain Street,Greenock aged 53 and gives his birthplace as Ireland and occupation as shoemaker. With him in the same household are Eliza Picket formerely Orr age 36 and her son John Orr aged 15, both born Ireland. Mary Picket age 14 and Ann Picket aged 12 also born Ireland Eliza Picket aged 1 born Greenock and apprentice Michael Collogreen age 15 born Ireland. His death certificate makes it plain that before Eliza Orr( whom he did not in fact marry untril 1853) he was married to Mary Brady, and the two daughters Mary and Ann are of that marriage, but what happened to her? Did they come to Scotland together and she die? It has been suggested that he may well have come to the Wigtown area as an agricultural labourer from Ireland as he was described as a labourer on his death certificate, so I would be grateful if anyone with access to the 1841 census for the Wigtown area could check and see if he's to be found. with Mary nee Brady or Elizabeth Orr. His parents again according to the death cert. were Robert Picket a mason and Mary Mc Fadyern has any lister any knowledge of this couple? Thankyou, Linda in Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

    3. Hi, I finally figured out the connection. My Jane Gunion, married to John Henry is the sister to your Elizabeth Gunion, married to William Muir. Parents are Robert Gunion and Elizabeth McHarg. Malcolm Lockerbie spent his credits on Scotlands people and got the death certs for John and Jane for me. Her parents were listed. Now it ties into the stuff you sent me. Thanks. Also, Sisters Agnes and Ann appear to be the same child, born 1795.
