hello, Could anyone tell me if realtionships can be inferred from the order of the people listed in the parish roll, or if they were listed in order of seniority. I have made certain assumptions from the order in the past, but I am wondering if there are any 'rules' I should know about. Dear Listers--I am working on my Scott family and I see that there are clearly 2 groups of Scotts in the 1851 census. One is the Drummoddie group, and I'm quite convinced that they are all related and our family, and the other is listed as Glasserton Mains. Can anyone tell me what that means? And also, what does Drummoddie Cot House mean? Is the Cot short for cottage? Also, in the 1841 census, I see the family listed at Glasserton Ecclesiastical Parish, Balcraig Whitefields. Can anyone tell me what the latter means? As ever, many thanks, Lynn in Fla. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hi Cheryl, I checked the Inch baptism register from 1833 thru 1837, but found no record of your William McDOWALL. Regards, Bruce __________________ Hi Bruce I noticed from an email to Irene that you wrote that you have the OPR's for the period 1834-1836. I wondered if you would look and see if William McDowall, born to Peter McDowall and Mary Anne Milligan is mentioned. I noticed on the 1851 Census that he was born in Inch (on Ancestry it says "Itch"). I always thought he was born in Stoneykirk but can't find his birth there. Of course he may not have been registered at all. On the Census his mother is listed as Margaret, but Peter had remarried at this time because his first wife died in 1843. William's Marriage Certificate says his mother was in fact Mary Anne. Hope you can help. I'd be most grateful. regards Cheryl

Hi Marilyn I'm sorry I don't really have any further information about this index other than I have given. The plan gave no other details of addresses in the village of Portpatrick or any further information of the owners/feuars as was in 1841. The list is purely an index to the plan with each property number corresponding to the person on the list. The feus would have been paid to the landowner annually, presumably Dunskey Estate or Stair Estates - the plan did not specify. You might search the collection of sasines held at www.nas.gov.uk for property records held by your ancestors. The plan & index is held at National Archive of Scotland, West Register House, Edinburgh. They will do copies by order through the website or by phone. For information on Feus see www.scan.org.uk Hope this helps. gina MConnon <homes_4u@comcast.net> wrote: Hello, I see McCulloch and Niblock that are names I recognize in our family. Dear List, I am at present re reading the "Reminiscences" of Peter McCaig of the Mye. It is a typed copy, I don't know who typed it. (Thanks to the McCaig family at Kilhilt). It is a wonderful account, It is amazing that he remembered so much Son of Peter McCaig and Elizabeth Milroy (of East Galdenoch) Peter was born at High Mye, Stoneykirk Parish on 23rd October, 1872 and spent his early years here then after many adventures he settled in Sunnyside Yakima, USA. I think I have this right. Not sure if Sunnyside is village or farm or what it is. He describes many aspects of life in Stoneykirk parish at that time. Here is a small passage regarding John Henry which might interest the Henry researcher on the List. "Like a great many of the little fellows of my early days my clothes were tailor made by the tailor in the village of Stoneykirk, Johnny Henry, who would come to the farm house, measure, cut the cloth and fit. Comparing his work with tailoring of the present day it was somewhat crude. The cloth used was not home spun, as was the case in many farm homes of those day, but came from one of the county woollen mills and wore like leather". Also the farm hands on the Mye at that time were the McQuillans (or McQueelans) and the Withers - Tom Wither (Tam Wuther). Bratton, Blaney, Agnew (Anthony or Anton). I hope this has been of interest. Diana
Trevor, I'm almost positive we are distant cousins! I checked the dates of Margaret(within the year)and Mary(off by 2 years). I went to Scotland's People and found the death registration. Lucky he died in 1855. Informant William McClelland, there he is again. I did a search in Scotland's People for him and came up with one hit, in Kirkinner. He died in 1865. The year on my gr-gr-gr-grandparents tombstone! He died at Bridge of Bladnoch, which seems close to Low Barness and to Ballaird Farm, where Mary Stevenson Craney was living before they left for the US in 1855. I have information on the descendants of Margaret and Mary. My father's mother was actually born in Australia, in Bondi in 1889. The family left in 1905 for New York City. My father says that she spent most of her life wishing she was back in Sydney.
Re: #8--all I know is that my Drumoddie farm area is given as Newton Stewart, so I'd guess that it's likely that these people also were related to the farming. I'm afraid I can't help with the names. Have you looked at the freecen web site or the Wigtownshire pages? You might try getting the microfilms from your local LDS center. From records I found on Scotlandspeople.com she was born in Newton Stewart (I hope I spelled this correctly) around 1839-1841. Her father is Thomas Porter (b: 1815 Girthon, and his father is James Porter). >From the marriage record for Horatia (she married Thomas Affleck in Buittle, Kircud May 20, 1859) I got her father's name, but her mother's name is illegible. Thomas remarried another woman around 1843 named Agnes Davidson, and they had 3 children (also found that info on Scotlandspeople). My dilemma is reading the name on Horatia's marriage certificate. Is there anyone that can actually see a microfische or the real certificate in our group? Or are there any Porter relatives out there? Horatia immigrated to the U.S. around 1887 and eventually settled in New Haven, Connecticut with her 3 surviving children (John Porter Affleck, William Porter Affleck, and Agnes Porter Currie).
