Her name is Hilda Morland. Her father was a farmer, mom helped on the farm. A sister named Alexandra Ann. Hilda was a pen pal of mine in 1967-68. At that time she was 15 years old and her sister was 3 1/2. Hilda's birthday is September 17th. She went to Stranraer Acadamy School at that time. 3. Hi everyone I have found a marriage for Anne George and William McCormick, they were married in Donaghadee in 1789, and went on to live in Inch and hhave their children there. Problem is I cannot find anything out about these two, no births, no deaths, no census (they may have died before 1841). They would have been born around 1765-1770 ish. Anyone who can help I would be most grateful. Perhaps MI's could give a clue, think they would have be buried in Inch. Please help, it's driving me bananas Thank you Kirstie --------------------------------- The all-new Yahoo! Mail goes wherever you go - free your email address from your Internet provider.

    3. Hi Bill You can now view the extract from the OPR on Scotland's people. Just buy some credits for ?6 and to look at the extract and save a copy will cost you 6 credits. 1 to search as I did, just put in Andrew McKie and the marriage year and the record is there. I haven't yet looked at any OPR's so I can't tell you what information it will give you but I presume its a copy of the original as with the BMD certificates. 1 21/08/1836 MCKIE ANDREW JANE CUMMING/FR361 M Kirkinner /WIGTOWN 889/ 0020 0188 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER Fiona -----Original Message----- From: sct-wigtownshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-wigtownshire-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of billmellsworth@comcast.net Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 3:17 AM To: SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WIG LIST] marriage 21 Aug 1836, Kirkinner I would like to find the marriage for Andrew Mckie and Jane Cumming. I hope a lister will do that lookup for you. Any IGI entry may be bought as a cheap photocopy of the original document, using order sheet #31831 "REQUEST FOR PHOTOCOPIES IGI AND SOURCES" from any FH Centre. The IGI shows the necessary Batch No/ and Serial Sheet which for that event are M118894/ and 0221 The form has clear instructions and the LDS Utah postal address. When I use the service I enclose greenbacks and receive a credit note for any unspent funds, along with the photocopy. Foreign currency is accepted. Cheers, ALISTAIR

    1. [WIG LIST] Little Aries/Martin
    2. James R K MacDowell
    3. Herewith an extract from a letter in 1908 from Malcolm Paterson of Bradford to James McDowell (my grandfather):- "Touching Little Aires, which Andrew Martin got by his marriage with Margaret Kennedy, having already "sasin" of certain other farms. I have a letter from my mother to Uncle David which says 'Do you know that our great great grandfather, Andrew Martin, and his brother planted several trees at Little Aires still living, and one of them has seven stems and all of them more than one?' During the last years of her life as well as of the lives of Uncle Alec and Aunt Mary, as well as Mrs Jardine of Blairshinnoch (?), who had a fair memory I collected a few particulars of the McCullochs and Martins, but have often wished I had begun earlier for to me nothing is more interesting than to know that at least I sprand from a sound stock." My great grandfather, James married Jess McCulloch in 1835 in Penninghame. Jess's mother was Mary Martin married to William McCulloch. According to my reckoning this Mary Martin would likely have been a granddaughter of the Andrew Martin mentioned above or of his brother. But I have a note in my grandfather's handwriting implying that Andrew was Mary's greatgrandfather. Little Aries is, I believe, in the parish of Kirkinner, almost in Sorbie.. Can any one add anything to these details? Jim

    3. I saw the name Douglas amongst your surnames of interest. The name Douglas in Stoneykirk and Sorbie is in my tree, starting with William Douglas about 1750, through Alexander 1776, Thomas 1807 to Martin in 1838, with many brothers and sisters on the way. Are any of these included in your Douglas tree? The first William Douglas married Jean McNarin and they had eight children but I have no record of their marriage, nor of the dates of birth of either of them and would very much like to find them. 3. My gg grandmother was Agnes McCulloch. She was born in about 1781 in Ireland to James & Elizabeth (McGill) McCulloch. On Mar 28, 1815 she married Thomas Neilson/Nelson at Whithorn in Wigtownshire. To them were born 3 children: James b 1818 in Glasserton parish, Wigtownshire Thomas b 1823 in Glasserton parish, Wigtownshire Agnes b 1824 in Glasserton parish, Wigtownshire The mother, Agnes, died Mar 17, 1860 in Whithorn; the father, Thomas, died Mar 8, 1863 on the Larroch farm near Whithorn. Their son, James, was my g grandfather. He married Elizabeth McKeand (b Jan 7, 1822 at Wigtown) in 1846. They had 10 children between 1848 and 1864, then came to America in 1879. One of the 10 was my grandfather, David Dalziel Nelson. I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who may be connected to the McCullochs mentioned above or to Elizabeth McKeand's ancestors. 3. Hi Diana & Randy, Re the BIRTHS item: CUMMING, Female - B?/?/1855 - At Stenhouse, parish of Sorbie, on the ? / ?? (the wife of ?) Cumming, of a daughter. This birth was 20 March 1855. Stenhouse is an alternate spelling of Stonehouse. On visiting my Wigtownshire rellies, I found the former to be closer to the correct (local) pronunciation. The mother was Jean WYLIE, wife of Alexander CUMMING. The child was named Annie. Sadly, she died 22 August 1856. My interest in this is that Jane WYLIE's sister, Mary WYLIE, was my gg'grandmother. 1. Re: [WIG LIST] 1684 wigtownshire census
    2. Crawford MacKeand
    3. Hi Kirstie, I puzzled for a while over how to present the data in the 1684 list, and seem to have tripped you up! But we can rapidly help you up and to such answers as it does give!! Let's look at one of your examples. > McCormack > Andrew 18 (2), 27, 42(2) The numbers are unfortunately only page numbers, as you have only found your way as far as the index at this point. So, what it is telling you is that on page 18 there are two people with the name Andrew McCormack, or variants thereon. And one more on page 27 and another two on page 42. So, from the page where you found that data, you need to scroll down a bit and you will encounter the list of parishes with their page numbers to the right, and looking for 18, you will see that the parish (or "paroch" as they called it) of INCH is on pages 15 - 19. Click on INCH and it will take you to page 15. Scroll on down and you will arrive at page 18 where you will find McCamick, Andrew living at Aies, where he is listed first, and so I think one can assume that he is the tenant farmer. His wife who is identified by sp. (spouse) is Issobel McNielie. There is usually no way to identify the relationship of the others listed for that location. They could have been living-in farm workers, or relatives, or both at once. Further down at Laigh Mark you'll find Andrew McCarmick, the tenant being Jot. McKelvie wid. I'd guess (& it's not much better than that) that Jot. is short for Jonet, and she is the tenant as a widow. One can then indulge in some grand speculation as to the relationships of the others at Laigh Mark --- Agnes and Elizabeth were probably Jonet's daughters, for instance and having only daughters, she had Andrew as a live-in farm hand. But that's sheer guesswork on my part, if just a little more than one wd have without the 1684 lists to read. > Does this mean for example that there were two Agnes' one was 25 and > one was 40 years old??? And for the Andrew do the brackets mean that > there are 2 Andrews aged 18??? So no ages at all I'm afraid, with the exception that you know that anyone in the list is over 12 yrs old. You'll maybe find it interesting to read William Scot's preface which you can get at by clicking on the end of the last line in the intro, section labeled "Preface to the Lists". I found it quite interesting and he explains that and some other points in detail. > So how do I elaborate on this, find out who was in which family, > addresses and such, or can't I?? For addresses, in 1684 "Andrew McCarmick at Laigh Mark, Wigtownshire" would have been complete information. There were no real mail services then, so an address would be of very limited use, but that would have been it. And as for who was and who was not family in each farm, sometimes you can make an inspired guess, and sometimes you just have to throw up your hands. If for instance cousins were being employed and living in, which would be quite common, there is usually no way at all to distinguish them from sons & daughters of the family, from the information in these lists. > Thank you in anticipation of your help. You are very welcome. > NB- I am sorry if I have bothered the wrong person! No, you got the person who did this transcription, so I don't think you could get much closer. No bother either; all very interesting I think. I had fun doing this -- there is a copy of the lists here in the University library and it seemed to me that although there's not a huge amount of genealogical meat on the old bones of 1684, there's enough. Please excuse the slightly odd layout which confused you. It was the best we could do with William Scot's original transcription. By the way, I'm sure that you'll also have found that small spelling variations meant almost nothing in 1684. The spellings of Scots family names really didn't settle down until fairly well into the 1800s. So McCormack, McCarmack and McCamick were written "as heard" and were quite likely from the same family. Kind regards, and good luck too, Crawford.

I have not visited but note that there is a 1949 Survey record at 25 inch scale for Balcraig Moor Farm. Part of Mochrum Parish is included which may be a useful search prospect for rellies "missing" in the Glasserton registers. Cheers, ALISTAIR M.
