Therefore, this is an instance of transcriber error. Nancy (Connecticut, USA) ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. hi, I think i have just replied to Dan off list, so i am repeating my message. Thank you to everyone for your replies, I had found The Commonwealth Graves Site, but it appears that my relative was listed only on a memorial panel, not in a grave, hence my question about all of those troops that were not buried. I shall get the book that Dan has recommended, and also the ones from D.G.F.H.S. thank you all again. Janet
Re the item: "DILL, Rev. William - M20/11/1855 - At No 8 Fettes Row, Edinburgh, on the 20th inst., by the Rev. A.W. Brown of Free St. Bernard's, the Rev. William Dill, minister of Colmonell, Ayrshire, to Margaret, daughter of John Parker Esq." This Willian DILL was baptised Penninghame, 21 Jun 1824, parents William DILL, (writer, banker, session clerk, registrar, Newton Stewart), and Elizabeth BLACK. Margaret PARKER was the daughter of John PARKER, (principal extractor of decrees, court of session, Edinburgh), and Margaret SCOTT. John PARKER was born in Wigtown, but I am unaware who his parents were. William DILL snr was born Minnigaff, about 1792. His father, grandfather and g'grandfather were also named William DILL. The last mentioned being my 5xg'grandfather. Regards, Bruce
I'm new to this list so thought I would post my interests in the hope that someone out there recognises some of these names and we can make a connection. This is just a brief overview of my connections in Wigtownshire. There is much missing info and still a long way to go with some of these lines, so I need more info so I can "put some flesh on the bones", as they say !!! My gt grandmother was Helen McCALLIE, born June 1881 in Garlieston, Wigtownshire, Scotland. She married William ENGLISH in 1901 and emigrated to New Zealand in abt 1914. Helen's parents were James McCALLIE an ag labourer (b. abt 1858 Whithorn, d. 1924 Creebridge, Kirkcudbright) and Margaret LITTLE a domestic servant (b. 1850 Sorbie, Wigtownshire, d. 1921 Sorbie), married in Oct 1874. Helen had the following brothers and sisters: John (Anderson) b. 1869, Stewart Donnan b. 1874, James b. abt 1877, Margaret b.1887, Catherine b. 1890. I have traced John (raised by his maternal grandparents) right throughout his life but have found no trace of any of the other siblings. James McCALLIE's parents were James McCALLIE a quarryman (b.abt 1823 -1828 Glasserton, Wigtownshire, d.1912 Glasserton) and Helen CASSIDY (b. abt 1825 Ireland ?, d. 1863 Whithorn), married abt 1848 Whithorn. Their children were: Hawthorn b. 1851 (m.Mary MAXWELL & Elizabeth CANNON), John b. 1855, James b. 1858 (as above), Catherine b. 1857, Edward William b. 1859, Annie b. 1862, (plus at least three other sons). After Helen died James married for a second time in 1863 to Sarah BROADFOOT and had: David b. 1864, Annie Pye b. 1867, Margaret Neilson b. 1869. James McCALLIE's (as above) parents were James McCALLIE a gardener / farm labourer (b. abt 1786, d. 1863 Whithorn) and Agnes NEIL (b. abt 1786 - 1791, d. bef 1864). Their children that I know of are: James (as above), a female, and Hathorn b. abt 1828. James McCALLIE's (as above) parents were William McCALLIE a carrier and Mary HUNTER. Helen CASSIDY's (as above) parents were Peter CASSIDY a lodging house keeper (b. abt 1786 Ireland) and Mary EVANS (b. abt 1796 - 1800 Ireland?, d. abt 1855 Whithorn). Their children that I know of are: Helen b. abt 1825 (as above), James b. abt 1827, Peter b. abt 1829, Mary b. abt 1831, Patrick b. abt 1833, John b. abt 1836. Margaret LITTLE's (as above) parents were Robert LITTLE an ag labourer (b. abt 1815 Ireland?, d, 1897 Garlieston) and Margaret McCULLOCH (b. abt 1818, d. 1897 Garlieston), married in 1838 Garlieston. Their children were: John b. 1838 (m. Helen LAMONT, children James, Isabella, Robert, Alexander, John, Margaret, John, William); Agnes b. 1840 (m. Stewart DONNAN, children Martha, Janet, Margaret, Mary, James, John, Isabella, Julia); Nathaniel b. 1842; Robert b.1844 (m. Elizabeth Hill SMITH, children William). Robert LITTLE's (as above) parents were John LITTLE a labourer and Susan COWAN. Their children that I know of include Robert (as above) and James b. abt 1844. Margaret McCULLOCH's (as above) parents were Gordon McCULLOCH a cobbler / linen weaver (b. abt 1785 ??? Kirkcolm, Wigtown, d. bef 1866) and Margaret KENYON (b. abt 1771 Ireland, d. 1865 Whithorn). Really hoping I can make a connection with someone. Regards, Maria Hurrell Southland, New Zealand
Hi everyone, This may be a little off subject, but here goes- While researching my family tree i have found that two of my relatives were killed in w.w 1 my relative from Wigtownshire died in 1915, at the battle of Loos in France, he is on a memorial in Loos cemetry, but my question is - where would he be buried ?, could he be buried where he fell ?, it was a horrendous battle, with many lives lost, and after reading a bit about it , it appears that he may have been gassed. Also as this has sparked my interest - what was it like in Wigtownshire during w.w.2 ?, was the pubs/hotels open ?, could they still get a wee dram ? Does anyone know of any locally written books, or web sites that i may try, you can contact me off-list. Janet
I recently read Martin Gilbert's The Somme : Heroism and Horror in the First World War (2006). One of the points made by the author is that for many many of the dead in WW I, the bodies were never identified. There are many graves of unknown casualties and many memorials inscribed with the names of those bodies were never identified. Nasty business. On the transcription of the 1851 Census for Jas Buchanan age 22 of Gorbals Lanarkshire his occupation is Bailevan Gaind. Is this an occupation anyone else has come across or an error by the transcribers? I would appreciate any help on this. Helen Stevens

Dear Wigtownshire Listers, Working from New Zealand, I have good reason to thank all those who have transcribed documents and memorials for us. I have been using the excellent booklet: Leswalt Old Kirkyard:Memorial Inscriptions, pub by Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society, 48 pages, ISBN 1-873977-85. I was interested in the entry for Tombstone 146 in Leswalt Old Kirkyard, Leswalt (page 28): '"Blessed are the dead which die in the lord." Rev 14th and 13th. Erected by Mary Agnew in memory of her husband John Martin farmer and smith bill who departed this life 21st May 1851. Also in memory of their children viz James who departed this life 1st May 1847, Jessie who departed this life 10th Sep 1853, Helen who departed this life 25th Oct [1853], Anne who departed this life 3d Nov [1853], Grace who departed this life 30th Dec [1853]. Also the erector of this stone Mary Agnew who departed this life 25th M...[25th March 1855] Also Margaret Martin wife of William C...[Gunion] who died at Barsolus 26th Nov...[1866] Also John Martin their son who died 3rd March 1889 aged 52 y...' >From my own family tree research, I have added the illegible dates in square brackets. Before a discussion erupts on John Martin's singular trade of 'farmer and smith bill', this seems to be a misreading of time-worn letters. John Martin's farm was at Smithy Hill so the text was probably John Martin farmer of Smithy Hill.' Does anyone know what the terrible affliction was that carried off four of the Martin children in the last four months of 1853? Many thanks to the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society. Best wishes Trevor Agnew Christchurch New Zealand
