McKERLIE, F.S.A. SCOT., F.R.G.S.&C.: "It is also stated in the Nial saga, that Kari, Solmund's son, passed the winter, after the battle of Clontarf, with Earl Malcolm, near Whitherne. There can therefore now be no doubt that Cruggleton Castle was built a good many years before the time of Magnus. However, beyond the statement that Earl Malcolm resided near Whithorn, we are left in ignorance as to the name of his residence. Cruggleton castle is near Whithorn, as well as the fortlet of Carghidown, which covered half an acre, on the Tonderghie property, Burgh-head; also Castle Feather, close by, on the estate of Physgill. All were built by the Norsemen. There can be no question that Earl Malcolm resided in one of them, and from the extent of Cruggleton Castle, there is every reason to believe that it was then built, and occupied by him. As already stated, the precipice on which it was situated is fully 200 feet above the sea. It covered about one and a half acres of land. Within the walls, which were battlemented, there was a courtyard, and buildings with eight towers. Another wall lined the interior side of the fosse or moat, fifty feet wide, and very deep, over which was a drawbridge. The gate was strongly fortified, with a guardhouse over it and portcullis. Landward, it was thus, in these times, considered impregnable. On the other side, the sea made it equally so. Immediately under the castle, there was a landing place, where vessels of small burden could be drawn up and secured in tempestuous weather. The means of communication was by a path up the precipice,(???) intersected at the harbour by a gate, having a small guard-house over it, and defended by a portcullis, &c., The path then ascended in a winding direction, and at the battlemented wall was another gate, fortified in the same way." Jim, are you going to walk this path on your next visit ? Perhaps the Castle of Dunskey was given to the Adair / Fitzgerald family by Earl Malcolm ? Archaeology Notes and images of Castle Feather are at : http://www. rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/newcanmore.details_gis?inumlink=63137 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Chrissie, Although there is no connection as far as I'm aware between our McDOWALL lines, by coincidence, my ggg'grandparents were William McDOWALL & Agnes THOMPSON, (parish of Kirkinner). If so, this could be her family, as her age is a good match. I couldn't help noticing the time between the marriage of John McDOWALL & Sarah LOWRIE, and the birth of Agnes. My g'grandfather and his first wife had a similar 'short gestation period', and as a result, were called before the Kirk Session to be rebuked. If you are interested in pursuing that sort of thing, you could try for Kirk Session Minutes, held by National Archives in Edinburgh. Regards, Bruce

A lot of my ancestors lived in the parish of Kirkinner, so I've studied that area in detail, both on maps and genealogical records. I also concentrated on that area when I visited there in both 2004 qand 2006. Have you tried Multimap or Googlemap? Unless significant ruins remain, you may not see them on aerial views. I am having trouble finding the area of another ancient castle and hope you may be able to help please. On Pont's map in the northern area of Penningham Parish, there appears to be "Ouer Castel Donnel" and "N. Casteldonnel" which may have later been part of the estate of Castlestewart of Ochiltree. On the 1782 map there are in the same area, south of the Cree Water : "Mickle Castle" "Castle Loch" and "Little Castle" western shore of Ochiltree Loch. This Stewart family may have gone to co. Tyrone in the time of the plantation of Ireland, and later be related to the Houston family of Craigs, co. Antrim, N. Ireland. It would be interesting if there are outlines of any ruins to be seen in an aerial view. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Note that it is on the opposite side of Lane Burn to Baldoon Castle. Lane Burn seems to have been diverted for the Baldoon Airfield, based on comparison of the 1895 and current OS maps. Crook of Baldoon has been referred to simply as Crook (1851 census), Cruick (1841 census), Cruik, Creoch, Creochs, Crioch, and Friar's Cruik. According to "Around the Parish of Kirkinner", it was part of the Baldoon estate in the 19th century. Bruce McDowall Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Dear Friends, The following passages from the New Testament have been my solace over the past few weeks: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest ...." St. Mathew 11:28 KJV "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also..." St. John 14: 1 KJV Thursday, March 15, 2007, was the darkest day for our family when we received news of the death of our beloved, special grandson who died in Las Vegas, Nevada, as a result of a grand mal seizure, it is thought. He was living in a state-run group home, and under the circumstances of his death there the coroner had to perform an autopsy. As of today, April 1, we have not been able to have a family gathering to put him to rest and to honour and respect this very special person who wasn't given much of a chance during his life. Our grandson was given the first name Clint, to carry on my family name. His father, our son, being given the name as a middle name. In naming Clint thus, the thought was that if he ever married and had children, perhaps he could pass on the name, sort of in perpetuity, down through his children It was not to be because marriage and having a family were not, and likely never would be, on the horizon for Clint. He was born with a rare chromosomal/genetic condition referred to as Di Georges Syndrome, which presented him with many developmental challenges, including a form of retardation which then "progressed" (as depicted) to schizophrenia the last two years of his life. It was a living hell for him and his family. With it all, he had a gentle sense of humour, and was the most loving, kind, forgiving human who never bore a grudge, but should have given the insurmountable challenges he faced each day. This character, this personality, is his heritage, then; this is what I hope will be passed down through my children, our grandchildren to our great-grandchildren and the generations that follow when questions are asked about who or what was this young man who died at the age of 26. If I may, if anyone wonders about which charity to make a donation to, may I respectfully suggest Easter Seals (U.S.A.) and one's local Mental Health Agency, both severely underfunded. Both of those agencies were helpful when Clint was first diagnosed as a baby, and later as he entered "the system" in adulthood. I hope I am forgiven for posting this personal loss, but as we spend so much time on our genealogy pursuits, and the lives of our forebears, we need to continue to be very much focused on our families in the present also. Today is the first day of the rest of my life to try to continue to do this. As a footnote: We try to take solace in that the Lord must have realised that Clint had suffered enough and enfolded him in his arms into eternal rest. Maisie
