It goes on to list their chidren who died at various times and then Edward who died at Drummore 5th January 1859 aged 78 yrs. There is also a Margaret Kerr who was married to a William Todd. 1. [WIG LIST] Family disappeared by 1861 Stoneykirk
    2. J & S Duggan
    3. Hi there list. I've hit a stumbling block in tracing a family tree line and have run out of known options. I have had a family of Thomas Kerr and Mary Kerr (nee McKay/MacKay) who were living at High Ardwell, stoneykirk. He was a retired ships master and was in 1841-1851, an Inn Keeper and farmer there. He was 62 years old in 1851 and his wife 59 years and born in Ayrshire, according to the census. He had five children in order of birth: Elisabeth Hamilton KERR, 1834, Mary Kerr 1835, Alexander (in IGI records) but Thomas KERR in census' 1840, Margaret Helen KERR 1844 and Victoria Kerr 1847. All were born in Stoneykirk at High Ardwell or Ardwell Inn. I can not locate any of them in 1861-1881 census', no marriages or deaths in 1855-1900 statutory records and can't see them in the UK census at all either. I checked Australian immigrants, as Thomas' son, John came to Australia with his wife and family in 1852, but no luck there either. Looked at US census and some Canadian but nothing that stands out. If anyone can locate them or suggest any further ideas, I'd welcome the suggestions. Many thanks in advance. Kind Regards, Jim

Since I don't have exact birthdates, to go on, I try to keep an open mind too. I keep forgetting that names were frequently misspelled. I didn't have any other siblings listed for Alexander. I was told 2 sisters, one brother, but that's not to say he didn't have them. I know he was in the 72nd Regiment of Highlanders called the Seaforth Highlanders joining in Glasgow in 1868, discharged in 1881. Does anyone know where I could find a military record that might have birthdate and more info for him? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BruceMcDowall27 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.wig.general/1869.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Lynne, I note that the NEILSON family which Nancy has reviewed, is inconsistent with your information. Not knowing the source information for either proposition, I have an open mind. The transcribed 1851 census data at http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/HistoricalIndexes/census.aspx#search appears to show the family described by Nancy at Bridgend, Newton Stewart, in Penninghame parish, household 3/50. (Just select the parish and enter the household number.) The children of this couple all appear to have been born in Newton Stewart, parish of Penninghame. Using the same site, there is a family at Hanover St, Stranraer, parish of Stranraer, household number 4/202, which looks likely to be the one you describe. They are recorded as NELSON, but spelling of names back then was somewhat arbitrary. This family also includes a Janet, Margaret, and Benjamin, but you didn't indicate expected ages for them. Are those ages consistent with your information? The Alexander here seems to have been born in 1846 or 1847, rather than 1848, but you did seem uncertain of his year of birth. This Alexander was born in the parish of Portpatrick, but as he seems likely to have spent his early childhood in Stranraer, he may well have grown up thinking that was where he was born. Author: NSeeds Surnames: NEILSON-SHANKS-ANDREWS Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.wig.general/1869.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Lynne, **Who wrote re: "Alexander Neilson, born in Stranraer about 1848. I can't find any record back in Scotland. I was told he had a sister, Janet, who also immigrated to NB."** I have seen various family trees for Alexander and Annie's New Brunswick family that identify Alexander as the son of Alexander NEILSON and Elizabeth ANDREW(S), born May 1849/1850 in Stranraer or Wigtown Parish... If this is the right family, then the sister reference you have (i.e., Janet) cannot be accurate. The daughter by that name of this couple (born ca. 1844-5) married John TODD in 1863, had a daughter Elisabeth "Bessie" TODD in 1864 and died of consumption at age 20 in April 1866. Bessie was taken in by her grandparents, Alex and Elizabeth. If it IS the correct family, then Alexander NEILSON of Newton Stewart, Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire (Alex's father) died 27 Sep 1907 in Cathcart Parish, Renfrewshire, Scotland at age 86. His wife, Elizabeth ANDREWS, died 17 Oct 1889 at Creebridge, Minnigaff Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. The couple had 13 children--at least 5 of which died before age 5.
