    1. Re: [WIG LIST] Scotlandpeople pre1855 Data
    2. Bruce McDowall
    3. Hi John, For a longer answer, one needs to distinguish between original OPR records and Index entries. FamilySearch.org enables one to search different types of sources, one of which is the IGI. The IGI is an index of selected sources, one of which is the OPRs. Although the majority of OPR baptism and marriage records have been extracted to the IGI, it is not complete. This may explain Jack's finding of OPRs via Scotlandspeople which he didn't find via the IGI, although that can also arise from search strategy. It may also work in reverse. As for any secondary source, the IGI is also subject to occasional TRANSCRIPTION ERRORS. One should not simply rely on the data from the IGI, rather, one should use the source information to access the the original record. Not only can one check for transcription errors, but there is often useful ADDITIONAL INFORMATION on the original record. (Many IGI records are extracted from patron contributions, or LDS procedural files, which cannot be checked against original sources. In such cases, one needs to be careful not to rely too heavily on the data.) Whether you access an image of an original OPR record via Scotlandspeople or an LDS microfilm, it is exactly the same record. There may be some differences in the quality of the reproduction, but in any case, it will be an image of the original handwritten entry in the parish register. Regards, Bruce __________________ The short answer is yes. I have found OPR entries at ScotlandsPeople that were not available from FamilySearch.org. Whether that happens for everyone, I could not say. 3. Hi Bill, I may be the McKeand/MacKeand that you've seen posting on the list. You are correct in thinking that it is a Wigtownshire name; it is mentioned as such in at least two of the older works on the area that I'm aware of. One of those is M'Kerlie's late 19th century book on the lands and landowners, and you'll find extracts of that in the web site "Wigtownshire Pages". Another was the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, which was published about 1800 and an article on Wigtownshire mentions the name. The early history is however very thin. I've been able to take the name back to the late 1600s, though without a very strong linkage before the mid 1700s. The place with the strongest McKeand associations is Penninghame, and there's some backup for saying that Barsalloch (a farm on the river road from Wigtown to Newton Stewart) was their center. County Down is next door, with just the "Sheuch" in between and clearly many families have moved in both directions, but I've not seen anyone that would correspond with your Peggy McKeand in my line. There are also other McKeand branches (in Wigtownshire) that have no presently known connection with my family, and I'm sure that I don't have a complete picture of the siblings, certainly not before about 1800. My best estimate is that there were about 150 - 200 McKeands in Wigtownshire in the late 1700s. But other than these general thoughts on the family, I can't tell you too much! If you take a look at the web site spatial-literacy.org and enter "McKeand" you'll see where they were by 1881 (and in 1998 too). Galloway, and more particularly Wigtownshire, is clearly their home turf. I've also taken a look to see if Richard Ball's Elizabeth McKeand might appear in my tree, but although our family was strong in the Sorbie area in the mid to later 1800s, I don't see her in there either. Regards, Crawford MacKeand.

In 1879 James & Elizabeth came to America along with their remaining 5 of 10 children. The other 5 died prior to their departing in 1879. They came 1st to San Francisco for a few months, then moved N to Oregon and settled a short distance S of The Dalles. I'd be thrilled to hear from anyone who may know of her ancestry. 3. I notice the name McKeand pops up occasionally and that there are sometimes posts by a contributor named McKeand. I think I've just discovered the name in my family tree. It was not a name I had heard before and as the writing on the death certificate was not clear I had left the name blank for the moment. When I looked at it again this week I am pretty sure the name is McKeand so I'm wondering if any of those with this name in their family tree might be able to confirm. My Great Grandparents Patrick and Sarah McCluskey (nee Shevlin) lived in Wigtown but were originally from Ireland. Sarah, I think was born in Ireland about 1820 but her brothers Edward and John were both born in Wigtown. Sarah's father was Edward Shevlin (born in County Down but died in Wigtown in 1860). His parents were Patrick Shevlin and Peggy McKEAND. I imagine they would have lived in County Down, but perhaps the name McKeand indicates a closer link with Wigtown from an earlier time? I'd be very interested to hear if this rings any bells with others researching this family. Wirh best wishes, Bill Kelly

Shortly after 8 o'clock it was discovered that the shop of Mrs M'Keand, pawnbroker on Queen Street, had been broken into. £87 in bank notes was swiped plus watches, rings, lockets, alberts, blankets, winceys, jackets. Suspicion has fallen upon the daughter of Mrs M'Keand, a Mrs King, who made off to Liverpool on an express train just that night. She was accompanied on the train by a man named Porteous, who had left his wife and three children. But waiting at Liverpool's railway station was the police who had been contacted in advance. And £70 and more money was recovered.
