Also, the 1880 Whithorn death registration details for Hugh PETTIGREW, and Elizabeth CRON/PETTIGREW, Whithorn 1899. There are other ways to get these, but the quickest and easiest is from Scotlandspeople. You will be in a much better position to plan your next move when you have the full details from those documents. You will also have original documentation, rather than second or third hand snippets. In case you haven't already discovered it, the Wigtownshire Pages at: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~leighann/index.html has to be one of the best county based websites, if not the best. There is a lot of information on Wigtownshire, links to further information, and lookup volunteers. Regards, Bruce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Someone looked up the Pettigrews and had Hugh as Elizabeth's father. He also said Hugh died of a cerebral haemorrage [sorry about the spelling] His death was witnessed by his son Peter. I didn't get a date of death for Hugh. People on GR do look ups and I asked last week sometime. I will stick to you and Malcolm now if thats ok. Do you have both marriage and death registration for Elizabeth? Scotlandspeople has a Hugh PETTIGREW death in 1880, parish of Whithorn, age 87. This could easily be your man, so worth downloading to find out what information it gives. I doubt that marriage to Janet McFADYEAN is the one you are looking for. The only Elizabeth PETTIGREW of the right age in the 1841 census, and daughter of Hugh, appears from the census to have a mother Elizabeth. This is also consistent with the names given to Elizabeth PETTIGREW's issue to John CRON(E). The naming pattern is not proof on its own, but at least is an indicator that further consideration is due. This Hugh's wife Elizabeth must have died between 1841 and 1851. Her last child was born 1841, so she probably died nearer to 1841 than 1851. Regards, Bruce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Diane: Glad you reminded me, I had lost track of the date. Visitors from Aberdeenshire and Brisbane here put everything out of my head except beds and cooking (the Roast beef of Olde /England today)! Happy birthday to Shakespeare too I think. ps. where my son and family come from is Lumphanan (so we have two Scottish grandchildren) the village where they live has the peel ring (ancient earthworks etc) where reputedly the real Macbeth was killed. Their local Inn is the Macbeth Arms but nobody seems superstitious about it. Betty ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Answers - Got a question? I have Elizabeth's father as Hugh Pettigrew ploughman and mother just as Pettigrew but have found a Janet McFadyean married in 18/10/1832 who might be Elizabeth's mother. Bruce I have no idea how to go about finding out where in Ireland John came from. I found 2 John Crones but the births were a couple of years out . Any ideas? If it gives the parents names for John and Elizabeth, it would make it easier to identify them in census records for 1851 and 1841. Scotlandspeople shows an Elizabeth CRON or Pettigrew died in Whithorn parish in 1899, age 66. This matches an Elizabeth Pettigrew born 1833 in the parish of Inch. She is probably at High Dargolls, parish of Old Luce, household 10/19 in the D&GCIS transcipt of the 1851 census at http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/HistoricalIndexes/census.aspx#search Her father and siblings are at Mark Cothouse, parish of Inch, household 7/27. This family are at Mark, Inch parish, ED 7, page 11, in the FreeCEN trascript at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl although their name appears there as PELLYESCUR. The farm name where Agnes McWHIRTER was resident at the time of her 1888 marriage, was likely to be Cutreoch, which is about 1 mile SW of the Isle of Whithorn. I don't know if you subscribe? They are living in Baldoon Cottage, Kirkinner in 1901 with children Alexander, Elizabeth and Maggie. In 1891 they are down as CROW at Tile House, Kirkinner. In 1881 Peter is CRAU with parents John and Elizabeth and many siblings at Whithorn. I have not gone back further, but I am sure they are there in one spelling or another. Hope this helps. Dear Listers, Is anyone able to tell me the history of the Sheucan Church in Stranraer? Was it the main parish church in Stranraer or was it once attached to Hillhead? Thanks, Annette Rose

It is quiet common especially in the Borders counties. I ran into the problem when hiring LDS films for BEW and ROX counties, found that on the films were not only the wanted events cited in the OPR Index, but also closely connected events for the same families which were NOT in IGI nor OPR IDX. Golden rule- get off the internet often, and do some searching in REAL libraries, to see what ain't in the VIRTUAL libraries.
