I recently obtained a copy of our grandfather's attestation papers for WW1 in Canada and he lists his next of kin as James McLean and address as Milsares, Sorbie - that's the best I can read - anyone have any ideas as to which farm that is? Also he says he served in the 395 Battalion Royal Scots Fus. - which I assume is Fusiliers - was this a militia? It says he served 5 months so was there a mandatory service period? Thanks for any help Barbara McLean Murrieta, California
>From Wigtown Free Press 3rd May, 2007 THE WAY WE WERE - WFP 2ND MAY, 1907 "The trial of Thomas Camden McClelland, charged with the murder of Miss Jane Broadfoot, Westmains, Kirkinner Parish, is expected to take place about the middle of May. The first diet will be held at Dumfries, and the trial will take place in Edinburgh. The murder was committed on April 5th 1899. The accused, who was certified insane at the time of the murder, has been confined to the asylum until recently, when he was released on the ground of his having recovered his reason. On his release he was again committed to prison to await his trial. The accused is a nephew of the murdered woman, and a son of a Wigtownshire Farmer."

Just wondering if anyone has a connection to the FULTON family and can place a Susan FULTON in their family tree. She is supposedly my gt, gt grandmother who supposedly married a James ENGLISH. Their son William was supposedly born in June 1877. When William married my gt grandmother Helen McCALLIE in 1901 at Garlieston, Susan was listed as deceased. I have been able to find no information what-so-ever about this couple or any other family they might have had. I have chased an ENGLISH family (parents Robert and Mary nee MURPHY) from Wigtownshire with a son William b. 1876 for many years now, hoping, hoping, hoping it was my William. My William's eldest daughter in later life told her brother (my grandfather) that William had the following brothers and sisters: Robert, John, Mary, Ellen, Annie, Samuel, David, Joseph, Rachel, Susan, Nancy. The ENGLISH family I have been chasing had all of these children, other than the last three listed, all in the same order too, that is why I chased them so hard. They were in Wigtwonshire in the 1881 and the 1891 censuses. In 1901 I found them in Essex, England minus William so I thought it must have been my family as William would still have been in Wigtwonshire where he married later that same year. But alas, I have just found that William from that family died in 1900 so I've been barking up the wrong tree. My William emigrated to New Zealand in 1914 and would never tell his family anything about his past other than the fact that his father was Irish and his mother Scottish (and other than his daughter somehow knowing who his brothers and sisters were). My uncle told me William was very anti-Irish for some reason. What I'm wondering now is if the Susan FULTON and James ENGLISH who appear on his marriage certificate are infact really his parents names. His death certificate has his parents listed as James ENGLISH and Sarah, no maiden name. I can't even find a birth for him either so he is proving to be a real man of mystery. Any help most appreciated. Maria Hurrell Southland, New Zealand
Hi Denice, The places you mention are farms, rather than towns. In the 18th century, and well into the 19th, spelling of both placenames and family names was at the whim of the person writing the record. The spelling you have for Clachanmore is the way it appears on the current OS maps. It is in the parish of Stoneykirk, just under 2 miles NW of the village of Ardwell. You find it from: http://www.multimap.com/ by searching on Clachanmore. (Depending on your location, you may first need to select Great Britain & NI from the Country drop-down menu.) Dergoals is in the parish of Old Luce, just under 3 miles ENE of the village of Glenluce. Multimap doesn't have it indexed, but you can search on Glenluce, magnify the image, and pan eastward along the A75. Dergoals used to be two farms, High Dergoals, and Low Dergoals. Laigh is an alternate form of Low. Once you know the area to look, you can go to the 1895 OS map at: http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotland_2nd_ed_list.html Select the Wigtown map, and keep clicking on that area, (the 'N' of WIGTOWNSHIRE), until you can read the farm names. Regards, Bruce __________________ I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth McCraken. She was born 1727, Clachanmore, Wigtown, Scotland and died 23 Jan, 1781, Laigh Dirgoals, Wigtown, Scotland. I apologize upfront if I have spelled any of the towns wrong, I'm going off of some information from the family. Elizabeth McCraken is the daughter of Thomas McCraken, she married Thomas Leach and at some point before 1753 came to Massachusetts, USA. Where they had a son Andrew and then went back to Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Denice

Once you know their names you can start searching the 1841-1901 census websites such as Scotlands People and Ancestry.co.uk for them and for earlier family. This should open up the search. Scotlands People is a subscription service, as is Ancestry, but the latter is more available to many listers who may do look ups for you. Hope this helps and I have not stated the obvious Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I took a look at the LDS film of the original census and I am sure that PELLYESCUR was a transcription error. Both the writing and film quality are fairly clear, but the family name is subject to ambiguity. In such cases, it is important to carefully compare the ambiguous word with unambiguous words in the same hand. Having done so, I have no doubt that the enumerator has written PETTYCREW, but failed to cross the 'tt'. I have an involvement with the FreeCEN project, and will draw this to the coordinator's attention. Interestingly, the same family have been transcribed as PELLEYECREW in the Ancestry database. Finally, I checked Scotlandspeople, where the index has them as PETTYCREW. By the way, other than having a subscription, I have no connection with Scotlandspeople. You said you were new to genealogy, so there are two important points to take from this. Firstly, one has to be aware that transcribed data often has errors. Secondly, regardless of that, one needs to be open to spelling variants. Regards, Bruce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
