My son who was down from Aberdeenshire visiting last week asked me if I had a book on the Lewis & Hart expedition - I did not but it is quite famous and I do have the Oregon Plate which depicts Merriwether Lewis and William Clark and details their amazing expedition of 1804-1806. Strange to see the surnames Merriwether and Lewis come up again in the message about Wm.Douglass and not only that, in the same family the name Tyrrell which I research, being the surname of one of my ancestors. 3. The name Lycurgus appears in my Classical dictionary of names appearing in the works of ancient writers, one was a Greek King who banished Bacchus, but there are many examples of others in there and googling for the name brings up many in America, some in Germany, both Lycurgus and Lucurgus as surname and Christian name though it is not in my Oxford dictionary of Christian names. 3. Hello everyone again! Thanks to everyone who have so rapidly responded to me already, and been so generous with advice - the WIG List really is an excellent and noticeably friendly group. I really appreciate your comments, and will explore them thoroughly. For any other newbies such as myself who might be interested, here's a quick synopsis of some of the advice: Mary, Anton and Joan recommended the simple and free *PAF 5.2* (Personal Ancestral file) from http://www.familysearch.org I was aware of this, but unsure, and now I'm trying it out and believe it is very easy to use, and suitable for my current modest research needs. Ian had lots of useful advice, ta!! and recommended *Family Historian* which is GEDcom based, from http://www.family-historian.co.uk This sounds very useful, able to handle a large tree/data set and capable of doing a lot for you - complex analysis etc. Malcolm said that if you have a GEDCOM file, you can export it into a great free package from *www.tribalpages.com* where there are various ways of presenting data with user friendly search facilities. Gail was very enthusiastic about the basic but very usable *Family Tree Maker* available from http://www.familytreemaker.com Anton also said that this is an inexpensive and useful package, perhaps more flexible than freeware ones. And finally, Joan reminded me how vital it is to keep paper backup of one's data!! I can add my own advice too - many folk keep disk or whatever backup of their files, but often in the same location as their computer. In the event of theft, fire or other catastrophe, do consider an alternative place to store things. I send my files to my geographically distant brother as my backup system! Once again, many thanks for your help - sorry I didn't reply to you individually. Sorry if this isn't quite what WIG List is for, hope I haven't annoyed anyone by inappropriateness! Cheers, Sue

    3. Hi, Bill - I've heard of Lycergis before. A quick check in an online names dictionary turned this up: http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=lycurgus LYCURGUS Gender: Masculine Usage: Greek Mythology (Latinized), Ancient Greek (Latinized) Latinized form of Lykourgos, a Greek name which meant "deed of a wolf" from lykou "of a wolf" and ergon "deed, work". In Greek legend this was the name of a king who was driven mad by the gods because of his impiety. This was also the name of a Spartan legislator of the 9th century BC. 1. [WIG LIST] advice please!
    2. Sue Thomas
    3. Hi guys, What advice can anyone give me on keeping my records in order, please?! I'd like to organise all information about individuals into some kind of *database*. What do people find the best package to use? Preferably something simple and freeware! From my science background, I currently tend to put everything into spreadsheets, adapting them to my own needs, but clearly this isn't the best method - a database is the obvious solution. Incidently, I've put my family tree into a Gedcom file, which is vital for various websites etc. but not entirely useful to me. Cheers for your comments. Sue (Southampton, UK) PS - thanks for the various comments about Cullochs - the interest is great, despite nil progress! - I'll keep hoping...

    2. Maria and Ross Hurrell
    3. Like Rob, my McCulloch family is proving to be a bit of a mystery. They do appear in Kirkcolm too, so may well be connected to Rob's family. I have a GORDON McCULLOCH who married Margaret KENYON. Margaret died Jun 1865 in Whithorn (listed as a widow) but no trace has been found of Gordon, where he came from, who his parents were, when he died, etc. Their 3 children that I know of are: - Mary (b. abt 1812 Kirkcolm, d. Sept 1880 Whithorn), married 1843 James NISH (children William, James, Mary, Agnes) - Thomas (b. Nov 1815 Kirkcolm, d. Nov 1876 Glasserton), married 1838 Jane WELLS (children Hugh, James, Richard, Mary, Janet, Annie, Elizabeth, Margaret) - Margaret (b. Oct 1818 Kirkcolm, d. Dec 1897 Garlieston) married 1838 Robert LITTLE (children John, Agnes, Nathaniel, Robert, Mary, Margaret, Nathan, Richard, Alexander, James) My line comes down from the marriage of Margaret to Robert LITTLE, then through their daughter Margaret (b. 1850 Sorbie) who in 1874 married James McCALLIE. If anyone has come across Gordon in their research, or is at all connected with this McCulloch family I would love to hear from you. Maria Hurrell Southland, New Zealand

    3. My husband's family does have Irish McCULLOCHs connected who came to Victoria, sorry I don't have any further info in my collection it is held by my husband's nephew. The Australian Dictionary of Biography - Online Edition relates the following article, entering McCulloch+Melbourne into Google shows further entries. >>WFP 30/5/1867 MARRIAGES >>M'CULLOCH, Jas. - M27/2/1867 - On the 27th February last by special license, by the Rev. Mr M'Causland, resident clergyman, at Radford House, Echuca, Victoria ( the residence of the bride's father) Jas. M'Culloch, Esq., of the firm of Messrs W. M'Culloch and Co., Melbourne, and formerly of Skaith, Wigtownshire, to Alice Bolton, only child of Henry Hopwood, Esq., http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A050163b.htm McCULLOCH, James (1841 - 1904) Birth: 1841 Death: 9 June 1904 Religious Influence: Australian Church Occupation: carrier, cattle breeder, company director, dairy farmer, local government councillor, riverboat owner Life Summary Resources Abbreviations Article History McCULLOCH, JAMES (1841-1904), businessman, was the third brother of William McCulloch. Educated at Douglas Academy, Newton-Stewart, he migrated to Melbourne in 1863 and joined the carrying company named after and directed by William. James worked first in Castlemaine but early in 1865 was sent to Echuca to open a branch of the firm. Although capital and guidance came from the Melbourne headquarters, James's energy, persuasiveness and diplomacy helped him to negotiate contracts with squatters for the carriage of their wool clips. He also acquired a small fleet of riverboats and barges. The company soon commanded most of the forwarding business from stores and offices opposite the wharf. On 27 February 1867 James married Alice Bolton, only daughter of Henry Hopwood. McCulloch visited Europe in 1873 and then settled in Melbourne to help his brother with the rapidly expanding company. He was a member of the board of directors and played a major role in its success. When business declined in the 1880s, James played a crucial role in attempting a merger with (F. A.) Wright, Heaton & Co. of Sydney and joined their board of directors. After William stepped down as director of his company in 1886, James carried on as the key member and was finally successful in merging with Wright, Heaton & Co. in 1898. The McCulloch Carrying Co. became the Victorian subsidiary, and James remained a director until 1904. He also had large interests in the Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and the Outtrim Coal Co., serving on their boards. McCulloch drove into Melbourne each day from his home, Barholm, Oakleigh, where he bred Jersey cattle famous for the quantity and quality of their milk and for butter production. His pedigreed herd began with a bull and seven cows selected for him in 1888 by William in England and said to be the finest ever to leave the country. Three cows calved on the voyage to Melbourne. In 1889 McCulloch first showed his Jerseys in Melbourne and won first prize for a cow in milk. He later won many awards; for example, eight firsts and several other prizes at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1900. Descendants of his stock were scattered throughout Australasia. McCulloch was a member and sometime councillor of the Royal Agricultural Society and in municipal affairs at Oakleigh served as a shire councillor. Predeceased by his wife in 1895, he died on 9 June 1904; they had no children. A staunch member of the Australian Church, his funeral service was conducted by Dr Strong. Select Bibliography J. If anyone has a connection to this family I’d be happy to hear from them. Regards Rob in OZ _____ I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users.
