Pamela, I assume you are the author--or have already contacted the author--of the Personal CAMPBELL Family Tree on Ancestry.com that contains the link to your KELLY/NIELSON branch through Agnes' marriage to Alexander CAMPBELL? If not, then the 1841 Census for Alexander, Agnes and family in Kirkcolm Village, Wigtownshire includes: Gilbt Kelly, Tailor, age 65 (NB: rounded), born Ireland Jean Kelly, age 65 (NB: rounded), born Wigtownshire Their birth years due to rounding could actually be as early as 1770 and as late as 1780...<sigh> Neither Gilbert KELLY nor Jean/Jane NIELSON/NELSON Kelly could be found in the 1851 Census, so I am assuming that they both died between 1841 and 1851. I have more detail on their children, etc., which I am sending offlist in PDF format. Good luck in your search! >From "The Way We Were" Wigtown Free Press 18th June, 1857 Thanks to the Free Press for these, there is no name given. The Ship "Fitz-James" crewed by sailors from the Stranraer district has arrived safely in Sydney after 98 days sailing. Capt. Hamilton and his crew are mostly natives of Kirkcolm. As proof of their successful voyage, only two out of 500 died, and they were a child and a toddler - although ten births occurred. The fishermen of Stranraer had some good hauls of herring on Tuesday morning last. The fish were very prime, and sold very quickly at a penny a piece. There were also quantities from Sandhead, Bay of Luce, which were if anything superior to those of Lochryan. Yesterday the town was also well supplied with herring and flounders - the later 10d per stone. Also arriving in Stranraer Harbour was the brig "Victor" from St. John's New Brunswick with a cargo of pine and timber for Messrs Robert Morland & Co. And in Wig Bay, Kirkcolm on Friday a smack "Isabella" left with a cargo of meal from Mr Hannah's mill there, and delivered it to Girvan on Saturday; and was ready to receive a cargo of coals for Mr Hannah, as a return cargo. 15th June, 1882 A Stranraer publican has served up the biggest oyster the area has ever seen. Mr McCulloch of the Downshire Arms, Stranraer showed us an oyster the other day caught somewhere in the Bay of Luce, measuring seven and a half inches in length by two inches thick. On being opened, it was found healthy and tender.

He was born in 1860 to William Blain and Mary Ann Paterson in Kirkcolm. Then by the 1871 census, James had moved with his mother and brothers to Leswalt (Address: Burgescroft) His father had disappeared, his mother is listed as the head of the family and there were very young children so I am assuming he may have died in Kirkcolm in the late 1860's or 1870. (I can find nothing regarding his death however.) The 1881 Census still show James and his mother and family living in Leswalt (Burges Farm Cottage) James is 20 at that time. The next information I have is when James and his wife Lydia Blain (Lydia Weldon) are boarding a ship in Glasgow to come to Canada in 1888. Lydia was born in Rutland England. In 1881, she was a cook working in The Vicarage in Battersea in London. I can find no information re their marriage. Is there anyone out there who may have some ! additional information regarding this couple. Thanks, Murray Blain Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The deceased gentleman has for many years been a resident in Maldon, and will be remembered by young and old as a staunch adherent of the Presyterian Church, in the affairs of which he had always taken a zealous interest. He was ever ready with a kind and geneal smile and words of wisdom which made him a welcome visitor at many a cottage door. His name doesn't appear in the Victorian Probate Index, so he either didn't own much, or arranged things to avoid probate. Regards, Bruce

Hello List, Could someone please tell me if a babie would be named on a burial list as I know that my 2X Great Grandfather Andrew Campbell had a brother name Alexander Campbell born on 4 August 1824 but he must have died between 1824 and 1834 when his parents named another son Alexander. Also he had a sister named Isabella Campbell born 13 August 1841 but must have died before 1851 census unless Isabella would have been known as a nickname but did not find anyone in her age group. Thank you in advance for any information I might recieve. Kind regards Pamela J Groves
Could the family have been following Judaic custom of burying their dead before sundown? When I was growing up in Glasgow there was a fairly large Jewish community, and it's possible that there could have been other Jewish families who settled elsewhere in Scotland. Just a thought. CAMPBELL, died 27th Nov 1942 aged 84 years His grand daughter, Polly, died 21st Nov 1989 aged 90 years 2. In Memory of Alexander CAMPBELL, late tenant in Eldrick, Kirkmaiden, who died the 26th Febry 1830 aged 77 years And Margaret THORBORN his wife, who died the 4th Augt 1835 aged 74 years Also Margaret, infant daughter of George CAMPBELL and Janet McKie in Auchentibert And of James McKAY, great grandson of the above, who died at Stranraer 15th May 1881 aged 12 years "He asked life of thee and you gavest it him even length at days forever and ever" Psalms XXI V.4. And in this case three infant deaths (one daughter and 2 sons) are mentioned but nether names nor ages are given. 3. Here lies the corpse of John McCREA in Milton, who died 1748 aged 80 years Also the corpse of Margaret CAMPBLE his spouse, who died 1738 aged 72 years & also the corpse of Elizabeth [ST]EUART, spouse to Hugh McCREA in Milton, who died the 8th day of Novr 1769 aged 59 years & of their children, young, one daughter & 2 sons This stone is erected by Hugh McCREA and Thomas McCREA his son[s]
