Hi Meg, Gas manufacturer is likely to be correct, based on the 1851 census, which Shows Michael and family at Mill St, Dumfries. His occupation is given as "Labourer at gas works". The Penninghame parish Registrar in 1855 was William DILL. He was also the Session Clerk for a number of years, so his handwriting appears in the Penninghame Church registers also. His handwriting seems to have become worse over the years, presumably affected by ill health. He died 02 Nov 1856, age 64. Having struggled with some of his handwriting, I can understand the difficulty you had with this record. Ironically, William DILL was a writer by profession. After years of searching for evidence proving this William DILL to be one of mine, John McQuillan, (a 6th cousin), provided me with the key record. I just want to say a big 'thank you' to Meg, Carol and Malcolm for their responses to my email regarding Catherine Doherty. You've all given me food for thought on this one. I'm not sure whether I will ever find out Catherine's fate but I'll be keeping all your emails for future reference. Quite often, what's not immediately obvious, becomes so in the future. Also, 'hello' to Olive! It's always nice to see your name appear in my inbox! The list has been very quiet of late so it's nice to see some familiar names and to acknowledge the help you all offer. Once again, a big 'thank you'! Kind regards. Linda (born in Birmingham, now living in Lincoln, ancestors from various parts of the UK and continuing to keep my brain working!!)
Thanks to Linda, the Doherty name is in evidence. Has anyone come across Roseannah Doherty in their search? My grandarents were married in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire on 22nd September, 1873. Amelia Eleanora Rae, daughter of John Robertson Rae and Mary King Leslie. James Davies/Davis, son of William Davis and Roseannah Doherty. Many years ago I found Roseannah to be probably from Whithorn. William Davis, born in Ireland, labourer, was from Stoneykirk. I haven't been able to get back to them although I have lots on Davis' but no Roseannah. Any help with this will be welcome. Cheers all; Olive.
Hi, I've posted this request before, maybe a couple of years ago, but thought I'd try my luck again! I wonder if anyone can offer any help or advice on tracing my great great grandmother, Catherine Doherty (Docherty/Dougherty/Daugherty - there are numerous variations so I'll use the variant used on each particular document mentioned!) She was born in Dumfries in 1849. Her parents were Margaret O'Niel and Michael Docherty. She appears in the 1861 census for the Parish of Penninghame, aged 12. Catherine had a daughter, Margaret Jane Dougherty, born in 1869 in Chorlton upon Medlock, County of Lancaster (now Lancashire). Maggie Jane OXBY appears in the 1871 census for Penninghame living with her grandparents (Catherine's parents) Michael and Margaret Docherty and their 3 sons and 1 daughter. I'm 100% certain Maggie Jane Oxby is Catherine's daughter, who appears in later censuses as Maggie Jane Doherty who married Alfred McGuigan in 1894. I found a Catherine Doherty aged 22 working as a Domestic Servant in the household of Alexander Harvey (a Tin Plate Worker employing 9 men and 3 boys) on the 1871 census for Didsbury, Manchester. After this I can't find any trace of Catherine Doherty (I've tried all variations of the spelling) or Catherine Oxby (just in case she married the Mr Oxby whose name Maggie Jane appears to have in the 1871 census!) I've ploughed my way through the 1837 online records for marriages and deaths as well as the LDS records with no success. I'm at a loss where else to look now. I've been trying to find Catherine since I started my search 10 years ago. I keep going back to her because I'm determined to find out what happened to her so that I can place her with the rest of her family. It's almost becoming an obsession now and this brick wall is giving me a headache!!!! Any help or advice on where else to go from here will be gratefully received!! (My other family names are McGuigan/McKie/O'Niel/Brodick from Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire areas). Thanks in anticipation. Linda Baker
Linda - you seem to be most interested in finding children of this couple which I am not able to help with. However I can offer the data from the 1855 birth of a brother, Francis DOHERTY in Penninghame, Wigtownshire : 1855 Births, Penninghame Francis DOHERTY born 27 June, 11:30am at Newtonstewart to Michael DOHERTY, 40y a Gas? Manufacturer born County Derry, Ireland and Margaret DOHERTY ms O'NEAL, 30y born Balmaghie. They wed 5 June, 1846 in Dalbeattie and had 2 living children at this birth [no notes on males or females as was usually done]. The Registration was signed by the father...Michael DOHERTY in Newtonstewart 9 July. William Diff, Registrar. Some is darkened and hard to read, I'll check the filmed original again when I get back to the local Family History Center at least by tomorrow as I work a shift Wednesdays in the evening. Finding any 1855 Civil Registration is a gift ! Sorry they quit asking all these questions...by 1 Jan, 1856 the amount of Registration questions was cut by about half. I'll check that occupation for Michael...it looks like Gas Manufacturer, maybe it was Tin but didn't look right. Need a closer look. Thanks everybody who's sent comments or information. I was coming to think it was from 1750s or 60s. Then also found some things online about Robert Findlay, the minister - who's the first person named in the kirk bell list. He was called to the charge in 1739 and was there until November 1761, after his brother died in 1758. I found first his brother's death notice, which refers to Robert as minister at Inch, then the entry from Fasti, for Inch parish in the Presbytery of Stranraer. He seems to have been quite a star.. Here's the entry. 1739. ROBERT FINDLAY, A.M., son of Mr Thomas F., min. of Prestonkirk, had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh l0th Dec. 1734, licen. by the Presb. of Dunbar 5th July 1738, called 3d April, and ord. 26th July 1739 ; had D.D. conferred by the Univ. of Edinburgh 7th Jan. 17 61. Having succeeded to a considerable fortune by the death of his brother David, he was obliged to engage in business at London, which prevented his doing the duty according to his wishes and engagements, he therefore gave in his demission with regret on the 3d, which was accepted 18th Nov. 1761. He purchased the estate of Drummore, in East Lothian, and died 30th March 1782, in 43d min. He marr. 15th Aug. 1763 Anne eldest daugh. of John Don, Esq.; she died 3d Feb. 1771, and had a son James, Esq. of Wallyford, and a daugh. who marr. David Anderson, Esq. of St. Germans.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.] (http://www.dwalker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Fasti%20V.2/p.%20364%20PRESBYTERY%20OF%20STRANRAER%20p.%20758.htm) So - I think ithe list is from the 1750s, though it might also be late 1740s. Excellent for me - it fills in a gap for the Blains at Dalhabboch, giving evidence for the James Blain whom I'd hypothesised should be there! I am looking for a family of Templetons; the only thing I know for certain is that a John Templeton was in Inchbread in 1798. Any possibility that this name occurs in your findings? Thanks for looking! Jennifer Kiernan
Hi Jenny My great x 4 grandparents were Robert Garrett (Girret, Gerrat etc) and Elizabeth Milvain. He was a farmer in Inch and they married in 1779. One of their sons, Rev James Garrett (b. 1794) came out to Australia (Van Diemen's Land) in 1828. Other siblings were John (1782), Sarah (1784), Helen (1786 and 1790), William (1788), Andrew (1796), and Robert (1798). Robert the son was a doctor and came out to VDL in 1824 as an assistant surgeon. I would love to know if Robert was one of the subscribers. Would also love to know if there are any descendents still in Scotland Kind Regards Rosie (Brisbane Australia) At 12:55 PM 11/09/2010, you wrote: >Today's Topics: > > 1. I have just found the information that my Sarah Purdy (married to William Henry) sister, Agnes was married to William Jamieson 5 Aug 1858 in Stoneykirk. Does anyone know if there are any headstone inscriptions for this family? They all died in Wigtownshire- Agnes in Lochans 13 Sept 1901. Known children: John, Williamine, and Alexander. Thanks.
