Hi, Just to tidy up this query, the James McClean family did live at Duchra , Inch Parish on the 1861/1871/1881 census! The son James mentioned on the notice lived there in 1861, although he and several of his siblings were born in Liverpool, he on the 2 May 1844. No sign of him in 1871 so presumably already sailed to Australia? Hi, Dochra was a farm in Inch parish - of course there may have been others of that name elsewhere too. Book: The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Vol. XI fifth series (vol. 31 consecutive series), p.259 (n327) at : archive.org/stream/journalroyalsoc05irelgoog#page/n340/mode/1up Old Session Book of Templepatrick Presbyterian Church. p.259 (n327) (Rev. Hugh Kennedy) has an entry on p.261 (n329), 4 May 1647 - Agnes Lin of ye parish of Inch in Scotland and William Lindsay of this parish hath their names buiked, and are to be proclaimed in purpose of marriage. p.270 (n338) 10 August 1647 referred to marriage of Capt. James Adair & Maple Blair. In M'Kerlies (1906) there is a reference to Hew Kennedy June 1620 who had sasine of Over & Nether Ardolandis and also in M'Kerlies there is reference on p.608 to Fergus Lin of Larg, May 1650 who had Arrieoulland. Did families of Wigtownshire go over to co Antrim, N. Ireland with Rev. Hugh Kennedy perhaps some settling at Ballyclare / Doagh area - Agnews, Shaws, Houstons, Adairs, etc. ?
Diana I can assist with: "Near Normanton, North Queensland, on March 2nd, James, eldest son of James M'Lean, late of Duchra, aged 41 years." The place name Normanton, North Queensland is correct. Queensland is a state in Australia - refer http://www.lonelyplanet.com/maps/pacific/australia/queensland/ Normanton is shown at the bottom of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Bold letters. The Savannah guides give you details on Normanton today and its history http://www.savannah-guides.com.au/page2-4.html I am not sure on the word 'Duchra' as it is not a North Queensland word/place that I could locate. I am assuming Duchra, or variations of that name, comes from where he was born/lived before travelling to Australia. I can help with the Grierson one. The county should be Custer County which is just south of Miles City, Montana. The town name does not match anything on the 1895 map and in the 1900 census the family is living in Township #6. They seemed to move around quite a bit. The two eldest children (Elizabeth and James) were born in New York, then the family was back in Scotland for the 1881 census where two more children (Mary and Henry) were born. By 1900, John Grierson was farming in Montana with two sons and his eldest daughter. ----- Jo-Ann Croft ----- Original Message ---- > From: Diana Henry <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Wed, October 6, 2010 7:32:24 AM > Subject: [WIG LIST] M'GAUL/M'LEAN/BAIRD-GRIERSON > > >From Wigtown Free Press 29th April 1886 > >> "At Bechelau, Caster Co., Montana, U.S.A. on the 6th inst., Grace Baird, wife >>of >> > John Grierson, aged 34 years." > > Some of these place names were hard to read, perhaps someone can correct them?

A bit of follow-up on this: Children of John McKibband/McKibbon and Margaret Gibson: Alexander bap. Stoneykirk 11 May 1755 Grisal bap. Stoneykirk 07 MAY 1757 Susanna bap. Kirkmaiden 24 JUN 1759 Mary bap Kirkmaiden 5 June 1762 John in Kirkmaiden 26 Apr 1766 (though mother's name is not given for John). I have two of the records. At Alexander's birth they were in Balgregan (Stoneykirk), at Mary's in Muir park of Logan (Kirkmaiden). The parents John and Margaret were married on 4th March 1755, the banns having been booked on 20th Feb. So there may be something in the Stoneykirk Kirk Session minutes? Anybody have anything further on this family? Jenny >John McKibband (McKibbon etc) and Margaret Gibson had several children >born in Stoneykirk and Kirkmaiden. I'd come across one of these, Mary >McKibbon born in 1762, and thought she might, on a long shot, be the one >I was looking for (married to James Blain in Inch in 1780s). > >The marriage of Mary's parents, John McKibbon/McKibband and Margaret >Gibson, shows they were both in Stoneykirk at the time of the marriage >(1755), had the banns called there, but were married by Robert Findlay >minister of Inch.
This is my first post and I am new at this so please forgive me if I seem ignorant. I am also just beginning my genealogy search and have already found some help from a very distant relative who has been very helpful getting me this far. Anyways, I've noted below the persons I am interested in learning anything about. James Scott baptized Oct 23 1785 in the Parish of Glen Luce, Wigtownshire, Galloway, Scotland. He died July 19 1849 at his farm at Pugwash River, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia and Margaret Simpson, daughter of Thomas Scott and Mary (Simpson), born about 1783 died July 27 1872, on the family farm, Pugwash River. Both were buried in Palmerston Cemetery, Pugwash, NS. James and Margaret Scott were married around 1805 in the Parish of Glasserton, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Thomas Scott was born around 1810 in the Parish of Glasserton and wife, Martha A. Simpson born around 1815 died July 30 1883, buried in Rose Cemetery, Westchester, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. I believe she was the daughter of Thomas Simpson and Barbara Kelly from the Parish of Mochrum, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Any information on the above persons would be greatly appreciated! Thanks much!
Hi all, John McKibband (McKibbon etc) and Margaret Gibson had several children born in Stoneykirk and Kirkmaiden. I'd come across one of these, Mary McKibbon born in 1762, and thought she might, on a long shot, be the one I was looking for (married to James Blain in Inch in 1780s). The marriage of Mary's parents, John McKibbon/McKibband and Margaret Gibson, shows they were both in Stoneykirk at the time of the marriage (1755), had the banns called there, but were married by Robert Findlay minister of Inch. Any thoughts? Or anybody else have them as ancestors? Jenny -- World's winds bending trees: breaths of all those who have lived flow now on the wind.

As I was trolling through all sorts of genealogy sites I came across this little ditty which rat5her amused me. I don't know who the author is. Maisie The Elusive Ancestor. "I went Searching for an Ancestor, and cannot find him still, He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will.He married where a courthouse burned, and mended all his fences, He avoided any man who came to take the census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame, And every 20 years or so the rascal changed his name. His parents came from Scotland, they should be on some list of passengers to the UK but somehow they got missed, And none else in this world is searching for this man, so I play Geneasolitaire and find him if I can, I'm told he's buried in a plot, with a tombstone he was blessed, But the weather took the engraving and the vandals took the rest, He died before the County Clerks decided to keep records, no family bible has emerged in spite of all my efforts. To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans, Just to give me one more pain married a girl named JONES!"
John Coulter was born in Dunure Ayrshire 1873 the son of Matthew Coulter and Margaret Andrew . The family moved to Cairnryan in Wigtownshire and John I believe worked as a steward on ships between England and Australia.Did he come back to Scotland ? His sister Mina was also born in Dunure in 1882 I am trying to find more info. on her as well.
