    3. FreeCen volunteers have completed their transcription of the 1851 Wigtownshire census: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sctwigfc/#p1851. You can now use http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl to search the 1851 census. Don't forget about the searchable 1851 census transcripts at http://www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/census.aspx. There is also an index to the 1851 census at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/parishes/51_census/census_info.html. Sometimes it takes more than one route to find what you're looking for :-) Mary P.S. For updates on which censuses have searchable online transcripts, see http://freecen.rootsweb.com/statistics.html or more specifically for Wigtownshire, see http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sctwigfc/.

    2. Mary Richardson
    3. Happened upon this South African 1890 death notice. When I googled to make sure that the Blairbuy in the announcement was the one in Wigtownshire (vs. a copycat name from somewhere else), I found these GIFFORDs plus HANNAYs at http://www.genealogyworld.net/ebooks/gifford.html. Coincidentally, my McCULLOCHs were neighbors of these GIFFORDs and HANNAYs, and I believe my 4g-uncle, Thomas Hannay McCULLOCH, was named for a Thomas HANNAY who was part of the GIFFORD/HANNAY clan. More precisely, Thomas HANNAY was a brother of the Andrew HANNAY who is mentioned on this web page as being in his nephew James GIFFORD's 1851 household. (My distant cousin Isaac PARKER was also in that household.) From Africa to my family. Small world! 1. [WIG LIST] Lavery/Lawrie, Thomson and Herron families, Wigtownshire
    2. Toni Olson
    3. Hi I am researching James Lavery, found in 1841 in Stoneykirk and appears to be born in abt 1796 in Ireland. James was a coachman and hostler. He married Ann Thomson, daughter of William Thomson and Ann Herron, in 1823 in Stoneykirk. I have found the following children of James and Ann: Mary b. 1823 in Stoneykirk James b. abt 1826-1831 in Leswalt – married Sarah Eden (?) Mary b. abt 1827 in Stoneykirk – married James McDowall/McDougall in 1848 in Stoneykirk Agnes b. abt 1829 in Stoneykirk Anne b. Abt 1832 in Stoneykirk John b. abt 1836 in Stoneykirk – married Jane Morton 1857 in Glasgow, married Isabel Kirsop 1876 in Glasgow Jean b. abt 1839 in Stoneykirk Charlotte b. 1840 in Inch – married Michael/Malcolm Laughlan in 1863 in Glasgow William b. 1843 in Inch Son John immigrated to Queensland, Australia. In Glasgow and Australia he was known as John Lawrie. I believe Ann Herron, mother of Ann Thomson, died in 1841 in Stoneykirk. Her birth was listed as 1771 in Wigtownshire in the 1841 census, Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. There was an Ann Heron born in 1769 to Agnes Dalziel and William Heron in Wigtownshire. I would be interested if anyone can confirm this parentage. Ann married William Thomson in Stoneykirk in 1798. William was listed as a Joiner on Daughter Ann’s death record. I have not found parents for William. Any help with any of these people would be greatly appreciated. I have also found a reference in a newspaper article for the death of Alexander Angus Lawrie, son of John Lawrie of Stranraer, Wigtownshire: The Brisbane Courier, Queensland - Saturday 17 April 1915, page 4 Death Notice LAWRIE, - On the 5th April, at Brisbane, Alexander Lawrie, son of the late John Lawrie, of Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland, Source: http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/20009816?searchTerm=daniel+lawrie#pstart1585690 This Alexander was the son of John Lawrie and Catherine Kerr. I believe these families are unrelated but thought I’d share the link. My John Lawrie lived in Brisbane and died there in Feb. 1915. Unless he married for a third time, Alexander is not his son, although he was separated from his second wife Isabel when he sailed for Australia with his children. John was abt 49 when he immigrated so it is possible he remarried but I have found no record of this. I am happy to share any information I have uncovered, and can provide a fair amount of information on John Lavery (Lawrie) and his descendants, although I have yet to locate any birth record for John. Regards Toni Olson

    3. Hi Patti, There's lots of information on your STEVENSONs. I have delved into some of it using census data from the IGI, FreeCEN and Ancestry.com. If you have an Ancestry.com subscription, or can get to a library with the service, you will be able to pursue this further. I did these transcriptions in a hurry, so missed noting some details. I did take a look at a some of the images though, and corrected transcription errors where I noticed them. 3. Meg -- If it wouldn't be too much of an imposition, I would also like to have these JPGs. Andrea's 3gg mother, Ann (Marshall) Smith, the mother of these three unfortunate children, was my 3gg aunt; Andrea is my 5th cousin. To Andrea: Congratulations on your new grandchild! I know you must be excited; we are expecting our 38th next month, and it never gets old! Incidentally, some months ago Norma Bell sent me a photo of the ruins of Mount Pleasant, the cot house at Torhousemuir where Alexander and Ann Smith lived. If you do not have it, I would be happy to send you a copy. Guy I. 3. Hi Bruce, well....there is an upwardly mobile family for you eh? They really got around didn't they? Thanks for putting it all in order like that. It shouldn't be too hard to trace them forward from there now. Imagine them going to Cornwall , London and Toxteth Park. Yes I do have a subscription to ancestry so I'll get to that now. Thanks again, Regards, Patti ----- Original Message ----- From: Bruce McDowall To: pmcvetty Cc: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2011 7:32 AM Subject: Re: [WIG LIST] Thomson/McTaggart/Stevenson Hi Patti, There's lots of information on your STEVENSONs. (Ancestry.com census transcriptions are somewhat prone to error.)
