There are a number of places i would like to visit since starting our family tree, mostly in Ireland, i will make a point of it some time. Thanks, i have a fascination for the Lakota nations. Funnily enough, passed down by both of my grandparents so it just goes to show how genetics play their part. It's fascinating when you start looking into the history of your relatives and the paths their lives have taken. I just wish there was more documentation available to get a deeper insight into their lives. And yes it probably is quiet fortunate that they didn't pick up on the Surname. That must have been quiet an experience, and again it's amazing where genetics take you and the diversity within our bloodlines. Hopefully you can discover more in time. >From searching the IGI there seems to be a lot of Sheridan births in Ireland which i suppose are only a drop in the ocean considering it originated there from the gaelic O' Sirideain in Co. Longford. It is apparantly most prevalant today in Co Cavan although by all acounts seems to have travelled far and wide throughout the world. On a side note i came across this on the surname database (I'm not sure on the accuracy but i rather like the idea of some elfin mischief !) haha............... http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Sheridan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi Maisie "Formulary of Old Scots Legal Documents" by Gouldesbrough and published by the Stair Society in 1985 is a wonderful help (if you can lay your hands on a copy) John C. was a farmer, horse groomsman and also sold horses. To me, this means he had some land which he farmed and dealt in horses. He had gained a reputation as a groom in his youth and that helped him to advance in business. Today's analogy would be a car mechanic who advanced to own his own garage and car showroom. I hope that some of the info helps Kevin discover some more about his family. I havent yet discovered any connection between your Sheridan line and ours but you never know. It gets difficult once you get back to the Irish records as very few still exist but hoping to some day discover where the Sheridans and our McKelvies originated. Also very interesting re the ploughmans occupation as i have an ancester on another line who was a ploughman and a few who were farmers aswell. Kind regards. 1. [WIG LIST] John McHarrie, pronunciation
    2. Sam Heron
    3. It is significant to realise that although it sounded like Meharry or Maharry it was spelt McHarry or McHarrie or at sometimes M'Harry with the apostrophe signifying the little 'c' in Mc. This was how no doubt it was heard by an outsider without a sense of the local pronunciations. McHarry in my youth in Stranraer sounded like M'Harry. I have noticed in recent visits to Stranraer that with each visit the local pronunciations are becoming more like the standard English. I was last there two months ago and it is ongoing unless I am with my older relatives. McMillan likewise used to sound like M'Millan, etc. Sam Heron ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2013 1:59 PM Subject: Re: [WIG LIST] John McHarrie, Scotland > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: Leena5 > Surnames: Maharry > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.wig.general/2120.4.2.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > To John James Meharry.... Modern dictionaries liken it to a general farm worker, but it was much more than that. He would either work for a single farmer with a very large farm or he would be a contract hire. In the latter case, he would have his own horses and plow and work on a schedule for the small farmers in the area. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Type Sheridan into the top box (surname) That will take you to a page of results, the very top one should be the death of John Sheridan with father Peter in Penningham The email address of the person who listed it is at the end of the row on the table. It may be a relative who posted it or it may just be someone researching other Sheridan lines who downloaded the cert in their search and they may not be able to tell you anything. But if it is a relative maybe they will have more info. It's worth an email to see i would think. For the Igi click this link..... https://familysearch.org/ It will take you to the igi search engine. In the (last name) box type Sheridan then underneath click where it says parents in blue writing That will open another set of boxes Into the (fathers first name) box type John Into (mothers surname) box type Pringle On the result page it should give you multiple pages the top 10 results or so should be for this family in scotland. The rest may be unrelated but may be worth a look through as.sometime it can relate to families from scotland emmigrating to USA, Canada etc which can be helpful. * You can restrict the search more by entering scotland or wigtown or whatever in the birthplace box in the initial search aswell * but i usually cast my net wider and narrow it down as i need to. I find on a lot of older records there can be spelling discrepancies so often putting less info into the search engine gets better results because either mistakes in the documents or mistakes transcribing can limit the search results ie elisabeth or elizabeth or liz or eliz etc can often be found in results and if you specify the exact spelling some can be missed so i often put eli* in the search bar to catch more at the same time with these kind of names. I hope that is clear and it helps you. Unfortunately i couldnt put a direct link to either of the results pages as it just kept going to a blank result page or back to the initial search page, but if you do the above it should work. Good luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
